For students shopping on a tight budget in 2026, the search for a good HP laptop under $500 has a clear winner: the HP Pavilion 15 with an AMD Ryzen 5 7520U processor, 8GB of RAM, and a 256GB SSD. It is not the flashiest laptop HP sells, but it hits the right balance of screen size, speed, and everyday usability for classes, assignments, and research.
The most important rule is simple: never buy 4GB of RAM in 2026. Windows 11, a browser with several tabs, and a video call can quickly overwhelm 4GB, leaving the laptop slow just when you need it most. With 8GB, the Pavilion 15 handles documents, Google Docs, Zoom, and streaming together without that constant stutter.
Battery life is another practical win. Expect roughly 7 to 10 hours of light use — writing, browsing, and watching lectures — although video calls and a bright screen will shorten that. The 15.6-inch Full HD screen gives you room for split-screen research, and the full-size keyboard is a real advantage for long essays.
Compared with the entry-level HP 15, the Pavilion also feels like a step up where it counts: a better screen and a more comfortable keyboard for daily typing. If you need a dependable student laptop under $500, start with this Pavilion 15 configuration — and check the current price before you buy.
