How to install Ubuntu on ANY PC (EASY! đź’Ż% + Working)

Ubuntu? What is that? home server? What shoud that? All of that is explained here; we'll start installing Ubuntu and then have our own self-hosted server ready in the next few days, weeks, months and years.
Although….
Will something like this ever get done?
Best of all, you start today!

In this article we will explain how you can install Ubuntu 22.04 to set up a home server with it. A home server is used to host your own website (with WordPress and your own domain) or to install NextCloud (file management / cloud). Of course you can do a lot more with it!

But first of all an operating system is required; we recommend Linux based Ubuntu. This existed at the time the article was written in version 22.04 LTS. However, other operating systems (OS) can of course also be used; these are best based on Linux as it makes hosting websites much easier, etc.

If you still think you don't like 'learning' a new operating system, then we can reassure you; there are several reasons to install a new, maybe even unknown OS on your server.

Ubuntu is a very simple operating system; you can't go wrong; everything is explained.
If you follow our instructions exactly, then it will not be a problem to carry out an installation successfully.
If you still have problems, please feel free to contact us via our community or via the comments ⬇️ below.
But before we stop you now, we would suggest, get started right away and install Ubuntu 22.04 LTS on a PC today 🖥(It can even be old, over 8 years and older! Ubuntu is a system that doesn't have much resources required. However, we recommend 8 – 16 GB RAM.)

Required:

  • an old or new PC (without important data; everything will be deleted!)
  • Hard disk about 128 GB - infinite GB
  • 8 – 16 GB RAM (4 are also possible, but then Ubuntu will be slower!)
  • an empty USB stick (all files on it will be deleted; the USB stick does NOT have to be new!)
  • a second PC (Windows, Mac, or Linux) Once you have all the required components, you can start!

So what are we waiting for?

Download Ubuntu

Since you need Ubuntu, go to this website (ubuntu.com) and select 'Download' in the top right.

Here select 'Ubuntu Desktop'. This is the version for computers with a graphical interface. If you follow the instructions, nothing can go wrong.

Make sure 'Desktop' is selected. Only then can you click on 'Download'!
If 'Desktop' is not selected, please do so; otherwise there may be problems during installation.

The ISO file will take a few minutes to download.

Flash ISO

After you have opened the balenaEtcher, you can tap on 'Download for Windows' (or MacOS or Linux). When the file is downloaded, you can open the app.

Select 'Flash from file'. Now you can select the downloaded ISO file.

With 'Select target' you now have to select the USB stick on which the data is to be written.

The last thing to do is flash everything. You do that by tapping 'Flash!'!

Installation on PC

Now to get that on the computer, you need to open the BIOS/UEFI. This usually works with F1, F12, F11, or ESC.

Once you are in the BIOS/UEFI select the USB stick as boot medium and follow the instructions to install Ubuntu 22.04 LTS.

That was the guide on how to install Ubuntu 22.04 LTS on a PC. If you have any questions or problems, feel free to write them in the comments below, or post them on our community!

If there are no questions, problems, etc., we would of course be happy to receive a positive rating. đź‘Ť

In our next guide we will install everything that we then need for the actual installation.
