SpaceX’s Bandwagon-5 Sets a 32-Payload Oct. 20 Run

SpaceX rescheduled its Bandwagon-5 rideshare mission for Oct. 20 after poor weather scrubbed the previous day’s attempt. The company’s launch page lists a one-hour window beginning at 6:30 a.m. Eastern from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral, with Oct. 21 as the backup opportunity. At publication, this remains a planned launch, not a confirmed liftoff. [1] [2]

One rocket, many operators

SpaceX lists 32 payloads for the mission, including cubesats, microsatellites and reentry vehicles. Its manifest names spacecraft from ICEYE, Xona, Planet, Varda, Portal Space Systems and other operators, as well as SpaceX’s Starfall capsule. The Falcon 9 first stage is scheduled to attempt its 19th flight and land on the Atlantic droneship A Shortfall of Gravitas. [1]

The customer totals vary because providers count different parts of the manifest. Spaceflight Now reports that Exolaunch arranged rides for 20 of the 31 payloads other than Starfall. Exolaunch’s own announcement says it will deploy 23 customer satellites on Bandwagon-5, a figure that reflects its managed satellite load rather than SpaceX’s full 32-payload total. [1] [2] [3]

Reentry experiments add another dimension

Two payloads illustrate how a rideshare can combine different mission types. Spaceflight Now describes Starfall as an uncrewed reentry capsule, but SpaceX has not detailed what it will carry on this flight. Varda’s W-Series 7 is described by the company as a pharmaceutical mission studying whether microgravity can help address poor solubility. Those are mission objectives, not reported experimental results. [1] [2] [4]

The mission therefore involves more than deploying satellites into orbit: it also includes technology and manufacturing tests that require hardware to return through Earth’s atmosphere. The variety reflects the rideshare model’s appeal to operators that need access to orbit without arranging a dedicated launch.

SpaceX says its webcast is expected to begin about 15 minutes before liftoff. Weather or recovery conditions could still move the attempt to the listed backup date. [1]
