Before becoming a DBA, think about why you want to become a DBA and why you believe you are qualified for the role.
As we all know, DBAs hold the lifeblood of a company's data operations. Instead of saying that a DBA relies solely on technical skills, it’s more accurate to say that a DBA relies on their character and ethics. I have often said that no matter how great someone’s accomplishments are, if they fail as a person, then they are a failure. For those who lack moral integrity and have questionable character, all I can say is, "Haha."
From what I understand, companies have high ethical standards for their DBAs. The ethical evaluation of a DBA often outweighs the technical evaluation. This is one of the main reasons why many companies are unwilling to hire fresh graduates or inexperienced candidates for DBA roles. A company’s assessment of a DBA's ethics is often long-term, and your ability to succeed in the job depends greatly on your moral character. This is easy to understand: think about it—DBAs typically have access to critical data, and it’s easy for them to perform operations on that data that are unreasonable or unethical. Therefore, if a DBA lacks ethics and cannot uphold their moral boundaries, how could a company trust them with such a critical responsibility?
For example, my colleague Shui Bin and I manage a database technology group chat. Whenever someone posts advertisements, harmful content, or sells data, the few of us who are admins spot it immediately and kick the person out. We have no tolerance for individuals who seek to exploit data through unethical means or gain profits through unofficial channels. Sometimes, I come across rumors about DBAs who copy data and sell it to others. I absolutely detest this kind of behavior. A DBA who engages in such activities is not only unqualified, but also a failure as a person.
Before doing anything, please think carefully and do not let short-term personal desires cause you to lose your way. A person’s credit and character must be carefully maintained, as once lost, it is impossible to regain—it’s like spilled water that cannot be retrieved. Similarly, a DBA's reputation is built over time, and one unethical action can plunge you into an abyss from which there is no return.
No matter what you do, always start by being a good person.
