When you plan a 100 km gravel ride on a Saturday morning, commercial navigation apps often fail in two predictable ways. They either steer your 40 mm gravel tires onto dangerous high-speed truck highways to save three minutes of travel time, or they send you down unrideable boulder fields and private logging tracks because an algorithm cannot differentiate between smooth hardpack gravel and jagged bedrock.
Even worse, standard elevation services regularly report ridiculous numbers. If you ride along a flat river valley, a standard elevation lookup frequently claims you climbed 400 vertical meters because satellite radar pixels catch bridge decks, cliff edges, or river surface jitter. When you finish the ride, your bike computer tells a completely different story than the optimistic planner you trusted before heading out.
To solve this for outdoor athletes, we designed and built Ściežka. It provides a dedicated, terrain-aware route planner designed from the ground up for gravel cyclists, mountain bikers, and trail runners who need reliable routing without paywalls or unexpected detours.
Here is why traditional mapping tools fall short in the backcountry, and how modern outdoor routing solves these pain points.
The Frustration with Generic Navigation
Most mainstream mapping engines were originally engineered for automobile logistics. Their cost formulas prioritize road hierarchy and speed limits: four-lane motorways and primary arteries are treated as optimal, while unpaved roads and dirt paths carry heavy penalties.
For cycling and outdoor sports, that logic is backwards. An athlete wants quiet unpaved forest roads, scenic ridge lines, and zero automobile exhaust. However, simply flipping a switch to prefer unpaved paths creates new hazards:
- The surface trap: A trail marked as an unpaved track could be a pristine gravel road, or it could be deep sand where you are forced to push your bike for five kilometers under the sun.
- The bridge elevation illusion: Standard elevation models measure the surface canopy. When a road crosses a 50-meter ravine over a bridge, naive elevation checks dip to the canyon bottom and climb back up, creating phantom 100-meter climbs on a level bridge.
- The paywall barrier: Established outdoor platforms have locked basic features behind monthly recurring subscriptions. Riders are forced to pay regional unlock fees just to download a GPX file or view surface breakdowns.
We wanted a seamless experience where anyone can open a browser, click two points on a map, and immediately receive a rideable route matched to their specific discipline.
Instant Terrain Adaptation Across Profiles
Different sports require fundamentally different routing choices. Riding a lightweight road bike on skinny tires requires silky tarmac, while a gravel bike seeks out remote forest service roads, and a trail runner needs pedestrian singletracks that bypass road networks entirely.
On Ściežka, switching between disciplines recalculates the entire route instantly:
- Gravel Grinders: In our Gravel Route Planner, the system prioritizes smooth hardpack, compacted dirt, and designated cycling routes, while actively penalizing loose sand, cobblestones, and high-traffic arterial roads.
- Mountain Bikers: In the MTB Route Planner, the planner seeks out natural terrain, woodland trails, and singletrack descents, avoiding boring straight paved detours.
- Hikers and Trail Runners: In the Hiking Route Planner, pedestrian footpaths, alpine paths, and stairs are fully unlocked, while vehicle-specific one-way restrictions are disregarded.
Before you clip into your pedals or lace up your shoes, you get a clean breakdown of surface types so you know exactly what percentage of the journey is asphalt, hardpack, or dirt.
Elevation Profiles That Match Reality
Accurate climbing metrics are critical for endurance planning. If an app tells you a route has 800 meters of elevation gain when it actually has 1,600 meters, you will run out of water and bonk halfway through the day. Conversely, false climbing spikes cause athletes to pack excessive gear or skip fantastic routes.
Through the interactive map planner, elevation profiles are smoothed against radar surface jitter and bridge anomalies. Bridges maintain their continuous grade across canyons, and flat lakeside paths no longer register fake climbing rollercoasters. The result is an elevation profile you can actually trust when budgeting your energy in the mountains.
Freedom to Export: No Paywalls, No Subscriptions
Planning an adventurous weekend route should not come with a checkout screen. Many popular platforms lock GPX downloads or regional map packages behind subscriptions, which is why we built our open Komoot alternative and GPX guide.
Ściežka keeps your entire workflow frictionless:
- One-Click GPX Export: Download clean GPX tracks with integrated elevation data directly to Garmin, Wahoo, Hammerhead, or your preferred mobile navigation app.
- Printable Roadbooks: For remote bikepacking expeditions and endurance brevets where phone batteries die, our Cue Sheet & Roadbook Generator formats turn directions and cumulative distances onto a printable A4 sheet.
- Drivetrain Maintenance: Because grit and mud accelerate component wear, the Virtual Bike Garage tracks chain and cassette mileage across your bikes.
- Community Inspiration: Discover scenic loops and proven weekend routes created by other outdoor athletes in our route catalog.
Great outdoor adventures begin with trust in your navigation. Try planning your next gravel loop or mountain hike at scezka.com and experience the route before you take the first pedal stroke.
