This weekend, I tested OpenAI’s ChatGPT Astra model to see how well it could create custom CAD models.
My project was simple: build a clamp for my cat’s scratching post. Whenever she climbs it, she finishes with a parkour-style leap that sends the entire post swinging into a dangerous oscillation. I wanted to avoid drastic fixes like bolting it into a concrete slab, so I came up with a clamp system to anchor it directly to a windowsill.
The hitch? My CAD skills aren't great.
I drew a minimal rough sketch, wrote out a quick description of the design, and uploaded both into Astra. About 25 minutes later, it generated a complete CAD drawing optimized for 3D printing, along with all the necessary STL files.
I imported the files into my slicer, fired up the 3D printer, and had the finished clamps a few hours later. Everything assembled smoothly with zero issues. Now we wait and see if it survives the cat test.
