A developer’s job is to build and ship software. Yet, too often, shipping a feature also means figuring out Terraform, IAM permissions, CI/CD pipelines, workload identity, and security controls.
These are essential parts of software delivery. But should every developer have to master them before they can deploy an application?
I’ve seen teams lose hours — sometimes days — troubleshooting infrastructure and pipeline issues that could have been prevented with a standardized platform.
The answer isn't to make every developer a DevSecOps expert. It's to make the secure path the easiest path.
That means giving developers a repeatable way to provision infrastructure, configure identity, and deploy applications, while platform and security teams retain control over standards and governance.
This is one of the problems we're addressing with Vertro: standardizing application onboarding and secure delivery for teams running on Google Cloud and GKE.
I’ve shared the deeper reasoning, practical examples, and our approach here:
Developers Aren't DevSecOps Engineers (And Shouldn't Have to Be)
How much infrastructure work should application developers really own?
