This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 1: Touch Grass
What I Built
Touch Grass is a simple, beginner-friendly web app designed to encourage people to take a break from their screens and reconnect with the world around them.
We spend so much time scrolling, studying, working, and staring at screens that we sometimes forget how refreshing it can be to step outside, get some fresh air, or simply enjoy nature.
Touch Grass is built around a simple idea: sometimes, the best thing you can do online is find a reason to go offline.
The project is a lightweight website built with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. It aims to make spending time outdoors feel approachable, fun, and easy to fit into everyday life.

The project is open source, and contributions and suggestions are welcome!
How I Built It
I built Touch Grass using HTML, CSS, and vanilla JavaScript, keeping the implementation lightweight and accessible to beginners.
I chose a simple web-based approach so the project could be developed quickly, deployed easily, and accessed through a browser without requiring users to install anything.
The current version focuses on the core idea and a working website rather than a complicated technical stack. I see it as a starting point that can grow with community contributions.
Open-source AI note: The current version does not yet integrate an open-weight AI model or local inference. Exploring how open-source AI could generate personalized outdoor activity suggestions is a possible future direction.
Why Does Open Innovation Matter?
Open innovation makes it possible for people with different experience levels to learn from one another, share ideas, and improve projects together.
For a small project like Touch Grass, open source means that someone can contribute a new feature, improve accessibility, suggest outdoor activities, or help make the experience better for more people.
It also makes experimentation easier. Future contributors could explore privacy-friendly, locally running AI features without necessarily depending on a closed API.
I want this project to be a reminder that meaningful ideas do not always need complicated technology to get startedβand that open collaboration can help simple ideas grow into something more useful.
