The Effects of Psychiatry on Society and How it’s not Taken Seriously

Did you Know?

`Did you know psychiatrists are qualified to assess both the mental and physical aspects of psychological problems? Even though psychiatry can help people physically, mentally and emotionally, it’s a health profession not being as well viewed as it should be. The field is badly viewed and discriminated. The media paints mental health in a negative light. It is hard for people to get into psychiatry because of how it’s seen as. There are people who argue psychiatry is an appreciated profession and its pros but these pros are often forgotten, because of how the field is treated.

The field

The field is badly viewed and discriminated. According to World psychiatry: official journal of the World Psychiatric Association (WPA), in a recent online survey across twelve countries around the globe, psychiatrists reported significantly higher perceived stigma and discrimination experiences than general practitioners. Dr. Nick Venters states mental health has been transformed over the last seventy years. There have been so many changes: the closure of the old asylums; moving care into the community; the increasing the use of talking therapies. They have all had a hugely positive impact on patients and mental health care. Yet, Nathaniel P. Morris cites that psychiatry the medical specialty focused on mental health—remains looked down upon in nearly every corner of our society. The public often doesn't regard psychiatrists as medical doctors. .Even among health professionals, it's one of the least respected medical specialties. The field is in serious decline.

Media

The media paints mental health in a negative light. According to Heather Stuart studies consistently show that both entertainment and news media provide overwhelmingly dramatic and distorted images of mental illness that emphasize dangerousness, criminality and unpredictability. They also model negative reactions to the mentally ill, including fear, rejection, derision and ridicule. Psychiatry is less respected than most other specialties by students and they perceive this discipline to be poorly respected by other medical students and current medical practitioners. However, MDege Psychiatry, says one positive impact of psychiatry in society is that artistic abilities, writing talent, musical creativity, entrepreneurship, and high productivity are often associated with certain psychiatric conditions, such as bipolar disorder, autism, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and psychosis spectrum disorders.

It's Hard

It is hard for people to get into psychiatry because of how it’s seen as. J. Wesley Boyd M.D., Ph.D. says getting psychiatric care in the United States is a lot harder than it should be .First, few medical students choose to enter psychiatry. This is partly because many medical students implicitly or explicitly get the message from classmates, teachers and the general public that psychiatry is not “real” medicine. And many students simply don’t find inpatient psychiatry appealing.

Professional

Lillian Stones states that psychiatry is a Rapidly growing job market: As mentioned earlier, the BLS projects a faster-than-average job growth for psychiatrists, especially in rural and low-income areas. This is likely due to the rapidly increasing need for mental healthcare professionals, including those with experience treating substance abuse disorders. High earning potential: According to the BLS, psychiatrists earn a mean annual wage of $217,100 . Specialized psychiatrists can earn even more. For instance, those who provide home and health services earn $262,120 a year, on average. While these pros are true, they often forgotten, because of how the field is treated. According to J. Wesley Boyd M.D., Ph.D., to compound matters, psychiatrists are paid less than other doctors. Also Nathaniel P. Morris cites that many view psychiatric treatments as pseudoscience at best and harmful at worst. Patients too often refuse treatment because of stigma related to the field.

Therefore

Therefore while psychiatry can help people physically, mentally and emotionally, it’s a health profession not being as well viewed as it should be. The field is badly viewed and discriminated. The media paints mental health in a negative light. It is hard for people to get into psychiatry because of how it’s seen as. There are people who argue psychiatry is an appreciated profession and its pros but these pros are often forgotten, because of how the field is treated.
