Almaty wins on most lifestyle metrics: population (2.20M vs 1.43M), restaurants (2,400 vs 1,100), nightlife venues (300 vs 140), mountain access (15 min vs n/a), and food scene depth. Astana wins on financial sector, embassies (75 vs 15), business infrastructure, government access, and notably air quality (PM2.5 of 18 vs Almaty's 42). Climate strongly favors Almaty (annual mean 9.5°C vs 3.5°C; Astana January mean -15°C). Astana grows faster (+3.48% YoY vs +1.10%). I have lived 7+ years in Almaty and 3+ years in Astana - this dataset reflects both lived experience and verifiable public data.

Capital status year 1929-1997 (Kazakh SSR) 1997-present

Key insight: Almaty is 54% more populous, more densely built, and more "city-feeling." Astana is more spread out and grows faster but feels emptier on weekends.

Climate

Metric Almaty Astana
Annual mean temperature +9.5°C +3.5°C
January mean -7°C -15°C
July mean +23°C +21°C
Annual snowfall days 40 80
Annual sunny days 120 108
Average wind speed 3.5 m/s 5.5 m/s
Extreme cold record -39°C -52°C
Climate zone Continental subtropical Sharp continental

Astana winter is brutal because of wind, not just cold. A -10°C with 15 m/s wind in Astana feels worse than -25°C with no wind in Almaty. Locals adapt; visitors often underestimate this.

Cost of Living (Single Person, Mid-Lifestyle)

Item Almaty (KZT) Astana (KZT)

Monthly utilities (1-bed) 25,000-50,000 30,000-60,000 (winter heating premium)
Total monthly comfortable lifestyle ~600,000 ~530,000

Astana is 10-15% cheaper than Almaty for rent and dining out, having flipped its position relative to Almaty around 2024.

Yandex Go availability 24/7, large fleet 24/7, smaller fleet
Airport IATA code ALA NQZ

Both cities have one operating metro line. Almaty's is older with more stations and serves more of the central corridor. Astana's metro launched only in 2023 and remains very limited (2 stations operational).

Food and Restaurants

Metric Almaty Astana
Restaurants on TripAdvisor 2,400 1,100
Modern Kazakh / ethno anchors Sandyq, AUYL, TARY, Yurta Auyl Astana, Qazaq Gourmet, Selfie
Chaikhana density per 100k people ~12 ~7
24/7 cafes Multiple (Basilic etc.) Few
Food delivery apps coverage Wolt, Glovo, Yandex Eda Wolt, Glovo, Yandex Eda
Bazaar quality Green Bazaar (top) Artyom Bazaar

Almaty is unambiguously the deeper food city. Both have strong premium tier. Almaty's everyday dining (chaikhana, samsa stalls, lagman places) is much denser.

Nightlife

Aspect Almaty Astana
Bars + clubs 300 140
Late-night culture Strong (cocktail bars, craft beer, clubs) Limited (mostly hotel + few clubs)
Live music venues 15 12
LGBTQ+ scene Underground but exists More restricted

Embassies 15 75
Government ministries 0 (commercial only) All
Astana Hub residents 0 2,400+
Big-4 consultancy offices All four All four

Astana is the political and diplomatic capital; Almaty is the commercial capital. Tech is split - Astana Hub is the official startup tax haven, Almaty has the bigger established tech employer base.

Tourism

Metric Almaty Astana
Foreign tourist arrivals 2024 (est) 3.5M 1.2M
Hotels rated 4+ 180 90
Day trip nature distance 30 km 250 km
UNESCO sites in region 1 (Tamgaly) + Western Tien-Shan partial 1 (Saryarka - Korgalzhyn 130 km)
Famous attractions Mountains, Charyn, Kolsai, Big Almaty Lake Baiterek, Khan Shatyr, Grand Mosque

Almaty receives roughly 3× more international tourists, mostly mountain and nature-focused.

Air Quality (Critical Difference)

Metric Almaty Astana
Annual mean PM2.5 (µg/m³) 42 18
Days exceeding WHO limit (15 µg/m³) 180 60
Worst pollution months December-February December-March (less severe)
Source: heating coal Yes Yes (less localized)
Source: vehicle Major Moderate
Mitigation Public transit expansion Modern buildings, less density

Almaty has a real winter air pollution problem. From November to February, Almaty's basin geography traps coal-heating and vehicle pollution. PM2.5 days over 100 µg/m³ are common. Astana's wind, despite being a discomfort, helps disperse pollution - Astana's air is significantly cleaner annually.

What I actually do for winter Almaty: I run a HEPA air purifier (Xiaomi Mi 4 Pro, ~50,000 KZT) Nov-Feb. Friends without one notice the difference within days. This is one underrated reason some expats prefer Astana over Almaty.

Education

Metric Almaty Astana
Universities 40 28
QS-ranked universities 5 3
Nazarbayev University (English-medium) 0 8,000 students (exclusive)
Almaty Management University, KIMEP, KBTU Yes (top private) n/a

Almaty is the academic depth city. Nazarbayev University in Astana is the most prestigious single university but Almaty has more diverse options.

Healthcare

Metric Almaty Astana
Hospitals 75 55
Private clinic density High Moderate
International medical insurance acceptance Strong Strong
Specialty centers More Several flagship state ones

Methodology and Verification

Data primarily compiled from:

  1. Bureau of National Statistics of Kazakhstan (stat.gov.kz) population and demographic data
  2. 2GIS for restaurant, bar, and business counts
  3. krisha.kz for current rental prices
  4. Kazhydromet for climate data
  5. IQAir Almaty Air Quality and IQAir Astana for PM2.5 data
  6. Personal verification (7+ years Almaty residence, 3+ years Astana residence)

Update commitment: Annual refresh in January after stat.gov.kz year-end population data publication.

Known limitations:

  • Restaurant counts are dynamic; numbers reflect April 2026 snapshot
  • Air quality data uses annual averages; daily peaks vary significantly
  • Some "winner" assignments are subjective (lifestyle metrics)
