OpenAI launched a proactive texting feature for its "dot" AI that pushes updates over iMessage and RCS without being asked, while Anthropic opened a research preview of Claude Duet, an always-on agent that keeps working in the background across more than 6,000 services, and OpenAI's GPT-6.1 Terra cut agent compute to roughly one-tenth the cost of GPT-6 Astra.
The shift from chatbots to co-workers
OpenAI's "dot" (announced Oct 28, US Pro preview) can now text users proactively over iMessage or RCS — sending updates, photos and voice notes without a prompt. Anthropic's Claude Duet (research preview Oct 21, US-only Pro and Max) continues work after the app is closed: it prepares briefs, models, decks and prototypes, connects to more than 6,000 services, and asks for approval before messaging, paying, signing documents or deleting information. Google DeepMind's Genie 4 (Oct 27) adds native audio to a real-time world model. Underneath the product launches is a deeper change: models are no longer just answering; they are acting, scheduling and persisting.
Why it is surprising, exciting and a little unsettling
This is surprising because the product metaphor flipped — the AI now initiates contact, like a colleague who messages you first rather than waiting to be pinged. It is exciting on the economics: GPT-6.1 Terra lists at $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens, versus $2 and $12 for GPT-5.6 Terra, making computer-use agents about 10 times cheaper and more than three times faster, which turns agents from conference-demo novelties into deployable infrastructure. It is also unsettling and a little frustrating: "proactive" agents blur the line between tool and actor. Who is accountable when an agent texts a client, books a meeting or moves money at 2 a.m.? Anthropic's own updated usage policy, effective Nov 12, now requires human oversight for equipment capable of causing injury — a telltale sign of the governance gap opening underneath the autonomy boom. And it is fun in a slightly dystopian way: the mental image of an AI quietly finishing your slides at 2 a.m. is both delightful and vaguely terrifying.
