OpenAI said on November 4 2026 that it will acquire developer-tools startup Pierre Computer, folding the company's Git-native code storage into its Codex coding agent. The deal extends Codex from an AI that writes code into a platform that also stores, versions and reviews it - a direct move against Microsoft's GitHub.
Key points
- Pierre's open-source Trees and Diffs libraries already power Codex's file browsing and diff review.
- Code Storage runs about 60 times faster than self-built S3 or R2, supports 32 TB repos and 30-plus concurrent writes.
- Follows OpenAI's Pando launch (Nov 2): roughly 80 percent lower push latency and close to 1 PB of Git data per day.
Why it matters
Owning the storage layer turns a coding assistant into a code platform, and puts OpenAI in direct competition with the GitHub workflow that most developers already use.
