On November 4 OpenAI told Axios it will acquire Pierre Computer, a startup founded in 2023 with roughly 24 million dollars raised whose open-source Trees and Diffs libraries already run inside the Codex app. The move folds code storage and review into Codex, a direct challenge to Microsoft GitHub in the age of agent-written software.
Key points
- Announced Nov 4, 2026 (OpenAI to Axios); terms undisclosed
- Pierre founded 2023, about 24 million dollars raised, team of 11-50
- CEO Jacob Thornton co-authored Bootstrap
- OpenAI Pando (Nov 2) cut push latency about 80 percent on roughly 1 PB of Git data per day
Why it is exciting
Codex is moving from an assistant that writes code to a product that owns the whole pipeline: branching, storage, review and deploy in one agent surface. The surprising part is the price of entry: a tiny team and a small funding round buy OpenAI a seat at the table where GitHub has lived for years.
