Stop Guessing Your Rate
After pricing 50+ freelance projects, I built a calculator that actually works. No sign-up. No download. Just copy, paste, and calculate.
The Freelance Rate Calculator
## Project Budget Calculator
### Step 1: Your baseline
Monthly expenses: $______
Monthly savings goal: $______
Total monthly need: $______
### Step 2: Work days
Calendar days/month: 22-23
Vacation/admin days: 4-5
Billable days: 18-19
### Step 3: Your rate
Daily rate = Monthly need ÷ Billable days
Hourly rate = Daily rate ÷ 8
### Step 4: Project price
Estimated hours × Hourly rate × 1.3 (buffer)
= Your project price
Example (California-based developer)
- Monthly expenses: $5,000
- Monthly savings: $1,000
- Billable days: 18
- Daily rate: $333
- Hourly rate: $42
- 40-hour project: $2,184 → Quote: $2,800
Why 1.3x Multiplier?
Freelance math assumes 100% utilization. Real utilization is 60-70%. The 1.3x buffer covers:
- Unbillable admin time (emails, calls, revisions)
- Scope creep
- Slow clients who block your calendar
