The problem with bookmarks
Everyone has this problem. You save an article, a tutorial, a GitHub repo. Two months later you can vaguely remember saving it — but where? Chrome's bookmark bar becomes a graveyard of titles you never parse again.
I wanted to build the version I'd actually use, so I made Linkit: an open-source, local-first desktop bookmark manager where every feature — including the AI ones — is free and unlocked.
Why local-first
The first design decision was where your data lives. Linkit stores everything in a local SQLite database by default. No account, no telemetry, no ads, no third-party sharing. It works fully offline, and lookups are sub-millisecond because there's no network round-trip.
If you want multi-device sync, you can opt into a free Supabase account. That's backed by PostgreSQL Row-Level Security — every record is bound to your auth.uid(), so nobody else, including the developers, can read your bookmarks. It stays free. There is no paywall on sync, no cap on library size, no functional degradation without a subscription.
AI features, fully unlocked
Connect any OpenAI-compatible API (or a local Ollama model) and Linkit unlocks:
- Auto page fetch + summarization — save a link, get the key takeaways and suggested tags
- Semantic search — search by meaning across your whole library, not just keywords
- AI-curated collections — describe what you're after ("collect modern frontend tooling"), and it matches, titles and tags relevant bookmarks for you
- Duplicate detection — finds both exact URL dupes and AI-detected near-duplicates (same content, different URL), with one-click merge
- Knowledge graph — visualizes your library as a network, connecting nodes through shared tags, collections, and semantic similarity
The AI-curated collections are the feature I didn't expect to use this much. You give it a goal in plain language, and it builds the collection itself.
The details that matter
Spotlight search (Cmd/Ctrl + K) does full-text and semantic search across titles, notes, tags, and AI-generated content. It also doubles as a quick-capture bar — paste a URL and save it without leaving your current tab.
Link health check scans in the background for broken links (404s) and pages that silently changed. Your graveyard gets cleaned up before it becomes a landfill.
One-click import from Chrome/Firefox/Safari/Edge HTML exports, plus CSV/JSON import for migrating from other tools. You're not locked into your old workflow.
Curation insights reports on your own habits: most-used tags, reading progress, content patterns, and what the AI surfaced from your unread pile.
Twelve themes, six view modes (grid, list, waterfall, timeline, tag-cluster, collections), multi-level categories plus cross-category Collections with custom emojis and colors.
Everything stays unlocked
Most bookmark tools in this space paywall their best features — AI summaries, semantic search, full-text search, sync, or library size all get gated behind a subscription tier.
Linkit ships all of it, unlocked, under an open-source license. No paywall, no ads, no telemetry, no feature that only works if you pay.

Tech stack
Go + Wails on the backend, React on the frontend, SQLite for local storage, Supabase (Postgres) for optional sync. macOS, Windows, and Linux.
Install
# macOS
brew install blue-idea/tap/linkit
Direct downloads for Windows (.exe), macOS (.dmg), and Linux (.AppImage / .deb) are on the GitHub Releases page.
# Local development
git clone https://github.com/blue-idea/linkit
cd linkit
# follow the README for Go + Node setup
Feedback welcome
Linkit is open-source and actively developed. If you try it and something feels off — a workflow that doesn't fit, a search that misses, a bug — please open an issue. Feature requests and "what are you building next" replies are equally welcome.
⭐ If you think AI-powered bookmarks should be free and open source, a star goes a long way.
