A clean SharePoint environment is valuable.

But clean content is not the same as AI readiness.

Microsoft’s guidance across SharePoint Advanced Management, Microsoft 365 Copilot, Purview, and agent governance makes this distinction increasingly important.

Copilot and agents operate against information users are already permitted to access.

That means AI can amplify good governance—but it can also amplify existing governance debt.

The Risk Is Not Simply “Bad Data”

It is also:

  • Overshared sites and files
  • Excessive or inherited permissions
  • Ownerless and inactive sites
  • Stale but discoverable content
  • Weak lifecycle controls
