These three destinations sit close together in Uttarakhand, but each offers something completely different. Rishikesh is spiritual and adventurous. Dehradun is green, laid-back, and full of quiet corners. Mussoorie is a classic hill station with colonial charm and mountain views. Together, they make one of the most complete short trips in North India.
Here are the top things to do in each place.
Top Things to Do in Rishikesh
Rishikesh is known as the Yoga Capital of the World, and rightly so. But it is also India's adventure hub, where spirituality and adrenaline sit side by side.
Attend the Ganga Aarti at Triveni Ghat. Every evening, priests perform aarti on the banks of the Ganga. The air fills with incense, bells, and chanting. It is one of the most moving experiences in the town, and it is free. Parmarth Niketan Ashram also hosts a beautiful aarti that is slightly quieter and equally powerful.
Try white-water rafting. Rishikesh is India's rafting capital. The stretch from Shivpuri to Rishikesh offers Grade II to IV rapids, suitable for both beginners and experienced rafters. Most rafting trips include cliff jumping and body surfing.
Visit the Beatles Ashram. Also known as Chaurasi Kutia, this abandoned ashram is where The Beatles stayed in 1968. Today, the ruins are covered in vibrant graffiti and murals. It is a favourite spot for photographers.
Take a yoga class. From drop-in sessions starting at ₹400 to multi-day retreats, Rishikesh has options for every level. Parmarth Niketan, Aatm Yogashala, and Vinyasa Yogshala are among the most respected.
Walk across Laxman Jhula and Ram Jhula. These iconic suspension bridges offer views of the Ganga and lead to markets, temples, and riverside cafes.
Explore riverside cafes. Tapovan is full of cosy cafes serving everything from Israeli platters to wood-fired pizza. End your day with a meal overlooking the river.
Top Things to Do in Dehradun
Dehradun is often treated as a gateway to Mussoorie, but the Doon Valley has plenty to offer on its own.
Explore Robber's Cave (Gucchupani). This natural river cave runs for about 600 metres through limestone formations, with a stream flowing through it. You walk barefoot through cool water while sunlight filters in from above. Entry is around ₹40. It is easily the most fun thing to do in Dehradun.
Visit the Forest Research Institute (FRI). Spread across a sprawling campus, FRI is home to a museum, colonial architecture, and quiet tree-lined avenues. The building itself is worth the visit, and the early morning walks here are a local favourite.
Relax at Sahastradhara. These sulphur springs cascade over limestone terraces into clear pools. The water is said to have healing properties, and it is a pleasant spot to spend a slow afternoon.
See the Mindrolling Monastery. One of the largest Buddhist centres in India, this monastery features a towering statue of Buddha and beautifully maintained gardens. It is peaceful and rarely crowded.
Walk through Paltan Bazaar. For local shopping, Paltan Bazaar is the place to go. From woollens to handicrafts to street food, it gives you a taste of everyday Dehradun.
Top Things to Do in Mussoorie
Mussoorie, the Queen of Hills, has its famous spots and its quieter ones. Both are worth your time.
Ride the cable car to Gun Hill. The ropeway from Library Bazaar takes five minutes to reach Gun Hill, the town's second-highest point. On clear days, you can see the Doon Valley and snow-capped Himalayan peaks. The 360-degree viewpoint at the top is a family favourite.
Spend a morning in Landour. Just 3 km uphill from Mussoorie, Landour is quieter, cooler, and full of colonial-era cottages and oak forests. Walk to Char Dukan for breakfast, and visit the 150-year-old Landour Bakehouse for fresh bread and pastries.
Trek to George Everest House. A 30 to 45 minute walk through deodar forests leads to the former home of Sir George Everest. The views from the ridge are spectacular, and the abandoned stone bungalow makes for dramatic photos. Entry is free.
Visit Kempty Falls. Yes, it is crowded. But the 40-foot waterfall is still worth a visit if you go early in the morning. The pools are shallow, and the surrounding pine trees make it a good picnic spot.
Walk along Camel's Back Road. This 3 km road offers views of the Doon Valley and is especially beautiful at dawn. It is free and far less crowded than Mall Road.
Spot wildlife at Benog Wildlife Sanctuary. Nature walks here take you through oak and rhododendron forests. Birdwatchers will enjoy the variety, and the sanctuary is a peaceful escape from the town.
Planning Your Trip
The best way to cover all three destinations is a 4 to 6 day itinerary. Start in Rishikesh for spirituality and adventure, move to Dehradun for nature and caves, and end in Mussoorie for hill station charm. The best time to visit is March to June or September to November.
Musafirbaba offers Rishikesh, Dehradun, and Mussoorie tour packages that cover all of these experiences with hotels, transport, and on-ground support included.
Whether you have four days or six, these three towns together give you a complete Uttarakhand experience without the long drives of the higher Himalayas.
