JobFit AI: A Privacy-First Resume Analyzer Powered by Local AI

Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 2: Side Hustle Submission 💸

This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 2: Side Hustle

What I Built

JobFit AI is an AI-powered resume analyzer that compares a resume with a job description. It helps job seekers identify relevant skills, spot skill gaps, review supporting resume evidence, and get suggestions for improving resume bullet points.

The goal is to make resume feedback more transparent and useful, while running AI inference locally with Ollama.

The source code is available for others to explore, learn from, and contribute to.

How I Built It

I built the application with:

  • React and Vite for the frontend
  • Node.js and Express for the backend
  • Ollama for local model inference
  • Qwen 2.5 (1.5B) for AI-powered analysis

The application takes resume text and a job description, sends the analysis request to the backend, and displays the results in the frontend. It aims to distinguish skills demonstrated by resume evidence from skills merely mentioned or not found.

A key lesson from this project was connecting a frontend, backend, and locally running language model into one working application.

Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Open innovation gives developers an opportunity to learn from one another, share ideas, and improve tools collaboratively.

By sharing JobFit AI as an open-source project, I hope other developers can explore the implementation, suggest improvements, and help make AI-powered career tools more transparent and accessible.

Current Limitations

AI-generated assessments can make mistakes, including incorrectly matching evidence to a skill. Users should review skill classifications and suggested rewrites before using them in a real application. JobFit AI is intended to support resume improvement, not make hiring decisions.
