Thank You, 2024: The Challenges and Achievements

Ayu Adiati on January 09, 2025

The year 2024 was such a roller coaster for me. In one minute, I felt on top of the world, and the next minute, I was running around aimlessly like...

thank you for your honesty! sorry the journey to get a job has been so tough. I lowkey think you're senior level and you can count your open source work as work! 6 years is not early career..you're at least mid level.

Hi Ayu,
i read through and want to say you are doing great so far. i felt the part when you said you are pivoting and this resonated with me because that is what i am doing in 2025 as captured in this post.

i wish you the best and can't wait to see your next move.

Awesome journey! 🔥 I didn’t know about the maintainer course and it’s true.. that there isn’t much info out there on how to be a good open source maintainer.

So glad you went through with running the workshop despite having fears around public speaking! Teaching is a great skill.

Oh, I did not know that you haven't worked as a developer all these years :O Is there something I can help with?

I think the keyword here is indeed "imposter syndrome" which I always find weird for others to say about me (or in general). I think imposter is true only in the rarest cases and we should encourage colleagues to get better self awareness, in what they are good at or lack, so that they can start working on these weaknesses as early as possible instead of giving them ‘advice’: Oh you just have imposter, we all have it. It's like an excuse so that I don't have to help the person who is struggling to point them in a different/better direction, and that's a shame.

And I think coding interviews makes this very clear: Can you answer the question? Do you know what they are talking about? Yes or no. No imposter indicator in any way.
BUT, only because coding skills are weak does not necessarily mean that is the reason to not get a job. I definitely did not get a job because I am good at coding, but for my soft skills. And if you know for yourself, also from previous jobs, tasks, hobbies and such, that you are always someone in the middle, or needing more time than the best or the average, which is okay (I am one of them), it is time to waste time on certain things and focus on other things you know you are good at and still be able to achieve certain things.

I should write a blog post about it, there is still so much to say.

TL;DR: Self awareness is the thing which will get you far. And as mentioned in the beginning: If there is anything I can help you with, please let me know :)

Thank you, Julia!
I know that I can grow more in tech writing, open source & community parts. As in the next article that I wrote, I'm looking for ways to be a technical writer or developer advocate. 😄

If you have any hint, please send them my way! 🤗
