HustlePilot AI: An Open-Source AI Business Assistant for Freelancers and Small Businesses
This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 2: Side Hustle.
What I Built
I built HustlePilot AI, an AI-powered business assistant designed to help freelancers, students, creators, and small business owners start and manage their side hustles more efficiently.
Starting a side hustle can be challenging. Writing proposals, creating product descriptions, preparing marketing content, and deciding how much to charge can take a lot of time, especially for beginners.
HustlePilot AI brings these tasks together in one simple interface. It helps users:
- Generate freelance proposals for potential clients.
- Create product descriptions for online stores and digital products.
- Write marketing content for promoting services and products.
- Estimate pricing to help users think through the value of their work.
- Explore AI-assisted workflows without needing to be an expert in AI.
My goal was to make AI useful for everyday business tasks and help people spend less time on repetitive work and more time building their ideas into real opportunities.

The project is built with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, with a design intended to be easy to understand, modify, and extend.
How I Built It
I built HustlePilot AI using three core web technologies:
- HTML to structure the dashboard, forms, and business tools.
- CSS to create a modern, responsive interface.
- JavaScript to handle user input, generate content, estimate prices, copy results, and connect to an AI model.
For the open-source AI component, I designed the application to work with Ollama, which can run compatible open-weight language models locally.
The intended workflow is simple: users enter details about their business task, the application prepares a prompt, and a locally running model can generate a response. This provides a path toward private, locally controlled AI assistance without relying on a closed, hosted AI API.
The project also includes a demo fallback for trying the interface when the local AI service is unavailable. The fallback demonstrates the workflow, but it should not be confused with live model inference.
The current GitHub Pages deployment hosts the frontend. To use actual Ollama-powered generation, Ollama must be installed and configured on a compatible computer, and the website must be able to communicate with the local service. GitHub Pages alone does not host the model.
Why Does Open Innovation Matter?
Open innovation matters because AI tools should not be limited to people who can afford expensive subscriptions or depend entirely on closed services.
For a freelancer or someone starting a side hustle, every expense matters. An open-weight model that can run locally gives users another option: run AI on compatible hardware, experiment with different models, and adapt prompts and workflows to their own needs.
Here is why that matters for HustlePilot AI:
- More control: Users can choose compatible models and customize how the assistant behaves.
- Privacy potential: With properly configured local inference, business information can be processed on the user's own computer instead of being sent to a third-party AI provider.
- Cost flexibility: Local inference can reduce dependence on per-request API fees, although hardware, electricity, and setup still have costs.
- Freedom to experiment: Developers can improve the tools, change prompts, add features, and contribute their own ideas.
- Accessibility: Beginners can explore AI-assisted business workflows through a straightforward web interface.
A closed API can be convenient, but it can also introduce recurring costs, provider dependency, and limits on customization. Open models give developers more freedom to build alternatives and make AI work for their own communities.
For me, the real value of open innovation is not just using AI to generate text. It is giving people more control over the tools they use to build their own opportunities.
My Agent Session
I developed this project with AI-assisted coding and used the development process to explore how an open-model-powered business assistant could work.
I have not included a DevRelay session link in this submission. If I create and save a session later, I can add it here.
