I Built a Daily Trivia Diving Game Where Rare Answers Sink You Deeper 🌊
Try it: https://freekrillion.com (free, no signup to play)
Inspired by the krillion.io concept, I built FreeKrillion from scratch — a daily trivia game where 7 prompts, 25 seconds each, and the rarer your answer, the deeper you dive. A perfect game sinks you 7,000 meters to the trench floor.
How it works
Each dive gives you 7 open-ended prompts (e.g. "Name a programming language"). You type as many answers as you can in 25 seconds. Every answer is scored by rarity across 6 tiers:
Plankton (10 pts) — the obvious answer everyone gives
Too Clever (15) — slightly off the beaten path
Schooler (30) — uncommon
Rare (60) — genuinely unusual
Deep Cut (85) — obscure
One in a Krillion (100) — nobody else thought of it
Depth = score × 10m. The twist that makes it fun: the obvious answer is worth almost nothing, so you're constantly fighting your own instincts.
The stack
Next.js 14 (App Router) + TypeScript + Tailwind
Supabase — Google auth + Postgres + Realtime for online multiplayer
Vercel — hosting, auto-deploys from GitHub
Interesting problems I solved
Fuzzy answer matching. Players type "js" when the answer is "JavaScript", or make typos under time pressure. I used Levenshtein distance matching against a bank of 50+ accepted answers per question (244 questions total), so close-enough counts.
Seeded daily dives. Everyone worldwide gets the same 7 prompts per day — deterministic seeded picks from the question bank, with the day counter anchored to a fixed epoch. The archive lets you replay any past day.
Real-time multiplayer. 4-letter room codes, Supabase Realtime channels — host starts, everyone plays the same 7 prompts simultaneously, live leaderboard. Same-account double-join is blocked.
Never reveal answers. A deliberate design rule: the game never shows correct answers. It keeps the mystery (and the replay value) alive.
Modes
Daily Dive — one shot per day, same prompts for everyone
Unlimited — dive as much as you want
Practice — warm up, no pressure
Multiplayer — pass-and-play locally or online rooms
What's next
Leaderboards, streaks, and more questions (the bank is at 244 — growing). If you play a dive, I'd genuinely love feedback: what felt great, what felt unfair, what you'd change.
Built solo. If you're into game dev, Next.js, or Supabase Realtime, happy to go deeper on any of the implementation details in the comments. 🌊
