Bit of perspective here, but Bootstrap (still very widely used) still depends on jQuery, and there are a number of jQuery plugins that are exceedingly popular (select2 comes to mind immediately).

I'd be willing to bet that a vast majority of jQuery use is either to use stuff that depends on it like that, or are sites that don't have the practical ability to update to something newer.

I highly recommend looking for vanilla alternatives - given example (select) i have found two worth checking out: Choices, Selectr.

Agreed.

The problem is that a lot of people just stick with what they already know and don't look beyond that (and honestly, in the specific case of select2, I can kind of see why, I've yet to see a vanilla alternative that provides all the same features and doesn't bring it's own set of potentially significant complications).

Of course, really popular platforms like WordPress including jQuery isn't helping either...
