The problem is that a lot of people just stick with what they already know and don't look beyond that (and honestly, in the specific case of select2, I can kind of see why, I've yet to see a vanilla alternative that provides all the same features and doesn't bring it's own set of potentially significant complications).
Of course, really popular platforms like WordPress including jQuery isn't helping either...
