Rating: 4.5 stars from 23 reviews. By pure hour-per-dollar, it is one of the better deals in the classic literature category.
What the 39 hours actually are
Cervantes published the book in 1605, and he was in no hurry. Every farce plays out in full, stories nest inside stories, and the plot moves only when he decides it is ready. That pacing is the biggest divide between listeners: some call it a literary rite of passage, others drop it halfway.
Here is the thing I keep coming back to: it is the pacing that makes it work as an audiobook. You travel hundreds of miles with Quixote and Sancho, and every stretch of road brings new trouble. The four-actor cast carries real personality, Sancho sounds wry and loyal, Quixote shifts from dignified to unhinged in the same scene.
The honest caveats
- 39 hours at one commute hour a day is about six weeks of listening. That is the real cost.
- It is an acquired taste. If you want a tight plot, it will test your patience.
- 4.5 stars, not higher, because some listeners found the old-fashioned structure slow.
Verdict
If your goal is the most classic literature per dollar, this is close to unbeatable: under fifty cents an hour for a text that rewards three separate listens. First as comedy, then as literature, and somewhere around listen three you realize Sancho is the sanest person in the whole book.
