Eight weeks is the whole advantage

A Christmas old photo gift usually fails the same way: it gets started in the second week of December. By then you are choosing between whatever a print shop can turn around in two days, and the scan you have is whichever one was fastest to make. Early November gives you about eight weeks. Spend the first two on finding the photograph and give the rest to everything that follows.

Pick the image before you pick the object. A formal studio portrait is rarely the strongest choice. The one that holds up is the one where something is happening: somebody laughing at a table, a tree that is far too small for the room, a coat nobody in the family owns any more. A picture with a scene in it survives being looked at every day on a wall or a shelf.

Ask before you spend a weekend on it. Send three candidates to a sibling and let them choose. Twice now I have watched somebody restore the wrong photograph and hear about it only at the wrapping stage, which no amount of careful work fixes afterwards.

How the eight weeks break down

The row people skip is the first one. Collecting runs on other people's calendars and is the only step that genuinely cannot be compressed. Everything after it can be tightened, at a cost you will feel.

Choose the object after the photograph

Format follows the image. A group shot of six people needs width, so a small round ornament turns it into a smudge. A single portrait works at almost any size. Match the two and the gift stops looking like a compromise.

  • Framed print: the safe choice, suits any image, needs 300 DPI minimum.

  • Photo ornament: best with one face, small, and it comes back out every December.

  • Christmas card: one restored photograph plus a short line, sent to the whole family.

  • Photo book: right when there are eight or more images with a story running through them.

Put a year and the names on the back whatever the format. A photograph without context drifts within a generation, and a photograph with names on it becomes the object relatives argue about inheriting.

Two things that quietly spoil it

Over-restoring. Skin smoothed until it looks like plastic, colour pushed to full saturation. The result reads as a stranger wearing your grandmother's face. Pull saturation down 10 to 20 percent at the end and stop while the image still looks like a photograph.

Not keeping the untouched scan. Restoration is a series of judgements and judgements change, so keep the original file somewhere you can find it in five years. If the print arrived badly damaged, follow the repair order in the damage repair guide before anything else.

About OldPhoto

Restoration and colorization run in the browser at old-photo-restoration-saas.shop, billed per the current plan on the pricing page. Upload what you have to the app first and see how far it comes back before deciding on the format.
