GitHub is extending Copilot beyond coding with model coordination, reusable workflows and permission-gated control of desktop applications.
GitHub has expanded Copilot with HydraFusion model coordination, reusable dynamic workflows and desktop application automation. Announced on October 2, the additions span VS Code, Copilot CLI, the Copilot app and the Copilot SDK, although several of the central agent features remain in research, public-preview or experimental stages.
Two models have also joined the Copilot catalog. Claude Sonnet 5.5 is available to customers on the Pro, Pro+, Max, Business and Enterprise plans. GPT-6.1 Sol is offered on Pro+, Max, Business and Enterprise. GitHubβs announcement provides no comparative benchmarks or guidance that one model should replace another.
HydraFusion is a research preview designed to let Copilot select and coordinate models for a task. Previously available through Copilot CLI, it is now also offered in VS Code and the GitHub Copilot app. GitHub says clearer and more frequent progress updates are intended to help users follow what the system is doing.
Dynamic workflows allow a sequence of steps to be saved and run again. GitHubβs examples include performing release checks, investigating failures and pausing so a person can review the result. Users can describe the required steps and ask Copilot to construct the workflow, or define it directly in code. The feature is in public preview across Copilot CLI, the Copilot app and the Copilot SDK.
Computer use, another public-preview feature, enables Copilot to navigate desktop applications, edit content and transfer information between workflow stages on macOS and Windows. GitHub says it can operate software that lacks an API or command-line interface. Copilot must obtain the userβs approval before taking control of an application.
The Copilot app now offers three Azure canvases for querying resources, checking cost health and working with skills hosted in Azure Functions. They can be installed from the Plugins area of the Awesome Copilot marketplace. Separately, VS Code 1.140 experimentally supports agent sessions spanning multiple folders and the reuse of ignored folders across worktrees to avoid repeated dependency installations and duplicated artifacts.
Taken together, these changes position Copilot as a coordinator for multistep work across models, code tools and desktop software rather than solely as an assistant inside an editor. The maturity labels remain important, however: HydraFusion is a research preview, dynamic workflows and computer use are public previews, and the cited VS Code capabilities are experimental. Teams considering them for production processes should therefore retain human review and allow for behavior to change.

| Dynamic workflows | Copilot CLI, Copilot app, Copilot SDK | Public preview |
| Computer use | Copilot CLI and Copilot app on macOS and Windows | Public preview |
