Eligible US university labs can seek GPT-Rosalind access, Rosalind Workbench and up to 30 free ChatGPT Business Standard seats for 12 months.

OpenAI announced the Rosalind Academic Plan on October 15, offering sponsored access to GPT-Rosalind and Rosalind Workbench for eligible life-sciences laboratories at US universities. OpenAI says GPT-Rosalind is designed to reason across scientific tasks and coordinate tools used in fields such as medicinal chemistry, genomics and hands-on laboratory work.

An eligible lab may receive up to 30 ChatGPT Business Standard seats free for a maximum of 12 months. The package also covers OpenAI models already sold commercially, within the program’s usage allowances. Admission to the plan does not by itself unlock GPT-Rosalind: the specialized model requires an additional trusted-access approval.

Availability initially extends only to academic labs connected to US universities. At institutions without an OpenAI Enterprise agreement, principal investigators or lab leaders may apply through the trusted-access route. Labs whose universities already have an Enterprise agreement must follow their institution’s existing process. Use is confined to approved people identified by name, and the plan currently offers no API access.

OpenAI says its pre-activation review verifies the institution and lab leader, checks credentials and decision-making authority, and considers the group’s affiliation, research program and proposed use. Responsibilities are assigned to both the lab leader and a safety contact at the institution. Oversight continues after access begins, and the company may ask for further information to establish that sensitive work has institutional authorization.

The company lists possible uses ranging from drug, protein, vaccine and therapy research to disease surveillance, agriculture, animal health, ecology, conservation and antimicrobial resistance. It also points to early academic work on collecting evidence about drug properties, designing proteins and studying neurodegeneration. OpenAI presents these cases as illustrations of researchers’ workflows, not as validated scientific findings or independent performance tests.

According to OpenAI, research data provided through the plan is not used for model training by default. That is the vendor’s stated policy; its announcement includes no independent audit or other external assessment of how program data is handled.

The terms make this a gated research-access initiative, not a broadly available academic subscription. Free seats could lower a lab’s initial cost, but access is bounded by location, screening, named-user rules, usage limits and a 12-month maximum. With no API included, the present offer is better suited to direct work in ChatGPT and Rosalind Workbench than to embedding GPT-Rosalind in a lab’s automated systems.

Category Offering Limitation
Participants Academic life-sciences laboratories Only at US universities
Seats Up to 30 ChatGPT Business Standard seats at no charge For up to 12 months
GPT-Rosalind Access after separate approval Only for approved, named participants
Tools Rosalind Workbench and commercially available frontier models API access is not currently included
