What are API’s and Why are they Important?

API is an acronym for Application Programming Interface
It is a medium in which independent applications or software can communicate with each other. Usually data that each organisation wants to make available to the public or other organisations in a programmatic way is made available through API’s. This way other applications do not need to reinvent the wheel i.e rebuild what is already existing.

API’s are important because it enables different solutions to be built on existing solutions or better still, helps organisations expand their existing solutions. Big cooperations such as Google, Facebook have made several of their API’s available. This has enabled developers build innovative products and services on their systems which in turn makes life easier for humanity.

Which API’s have you used and how have you used them?
