I moved last year and one of the small annoyances I did not think about was finding a new smog check place. California requires it every two years and my old shop was fifteen minutes from my old apartment, so I never had to think about it. Now I was starting from zero in a neighborhood where every third storefront has a sign that says SMOG in big letters and they all charge different amounts.
Why the prices vary so much
The certificate itself costs a flat fee the state sets. Everything on top of that is the shop marking it up however they want. I saw places quoting 89 dollars and places quoting 29 for what is legally the same test. The cheap ones usually make it back on you somewhere, either by finding something wrong that costs 200 to fix, or by taking three hours when they promised forty minutes.
The expensive ones are not necessarily more honest either. A few of them just bank on people not calling around. I called around.
What actually matters
The thing nobody tells you is that the test results are the same everywhere because the equipment is the same. A STAR station is a STAR station. What differs is how fast they get you in, whether they try to upsell you on repairs you do not need, and whether the waiting room has a chair that is not broken.
When I was figuring this out I ended up using a directory that lists certified stations by location with real prices, which saved me from driving to three places to compare. If you are in the same spot, searching for a smog check near me and cross-referencing the prices before you go is worth the ten minutes.
The scammy part to watch for
Here is the one that got my attention. A station offers a 25 dollar smog check, you go in, and they fail you on something vague. Then they quote you 300 to fix it. You can either pay them or leave, but you still owe the 25 for the test and your car still is not registered.
The fix is boring. Go to a shop that has decent reviews from people who actually passed, not just people praising the cheap price. A shop that passes most cars is a shop that is not inventing problems. The reviews will tell you this if you read past the five star ones.
I ended up paying 49 dollars at a place that took 35 minutes and did not try to sell me anything. That felt like the actual fair price. Everything cheaper came with a catch and everything more expensive was just charging for the neighborhood.
