Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 2: Side Hustle Submission 💸

This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 2: Side Hustle

What I Built

I built a hack that will build your monthly budget based on personalized details that a user may not want publicly available. What I had in mind:

  • Groceries based on what a user is used to eating
  • Servicing based on what appliances they have
  • Estimated travel allowance for daily commute
  • Subscription tracking
  • Gift reminders and personalized recommendations for birthdays, anniversaries, festivals, etc They would also have a budget breakdown option for more complex stuff - if you're going on a holiday you might need to account for travel costs, new clothes, shopping expenses, food expenses, etc.

How I Built It

Used Ollama for the first time for this one! Chose it because it is a good place to start with open-weight models - I used llama3.2 since it was the fastest and I'm asking it pretty simple questions. Also because my grandma has a pretty slow computer and it couldn't handle anything that wasn't light weight

I was optimizing for people who aren't very tech savvy but have a healthy suspicion of the dangers of sharing personal data of themselves and their family with third parties

Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Open innovation makes MonthlyHustle possible 'cause for most of my family? Privacy is non-negotiable. They don't even use free TODO apps most of the time since the ads sell their personal info. And for personal budgets and gift lists? Things that special need to be kept to yourself. Closed APIs force you to send sensitive data - they can be used for habit tracking. And many are not comfortable sharing their and their fam's data to third-parties

With local open-weight models, everything runs 100% on your device. You can get smart, tailored AI recommendations like an LLM BUT without trading away your privacy (or paying per-token fees)

My First User

My first users were my friends and family! They took a look at the prototype and here are what they said,
"It's good, fine - I'd like to see how this grows. If it is secure enough, I'd like to share my monthly expenses and stuff so that it can help me figure out how to achieve my FIRE goals long term."
"I like the personalized gift idea - especially if it is tailored to each family member. Good for last minute gifts"
"Maybe we can look into making this a holistic financial heath app - I like the idea of a personalized CA (charted accountant)"
"Can it do my taxes?"

And yes, I was paid - in ideas for future enhancements! 😆
(Till date, I made 0$ from this hack)
