If you're planning to immigrate to Canada through Express Entry, your CRS (Comprehensive Ranking System) score is the number that decides everything. Here's how it works and how to calculate yours.
What is the CRS score?
The Comprehensive Ranking System ranks all candidates in the Express Entry pool out of 1,200 points:
- Core/human capital (up to 500): age, education, language skills, Canadian work experience
- Spouse factors (up to 40): your partner's education, language, and work experience
- Skill transferability (up to 100): combinations of education, work experience, and language
- Additional points (up to 600): provincial nomination (600!), French skills (up to 50), Canadian study (up to 30), sibling in Canada (15)
What score do you actually need?
There's no fixed minimum — each draw sets its own cut-off. Recent rounds show how much it varies by category:
- French-language draws: cut-offs around 435
- Canadian Experience Class: around 518-519
- Provincial Nominee Program: 700+ (because of the 600-point nomination bonus)
- General draws: typically 520+
The key insight: your score only matters relative to the draw type you qualify for. A 470 might not get you invited in a general draw but could be plenty in a category-based one.
How to calculate your score
You can do it by hand with IRCC's published criteria, but it's tedious. I built a free calculator that does it in under a minute: CRS Calculator.
What makes it different from IRCC's own tool:
- Shows your rank in the live Express Entry pool (229,000+ candidates)
- Compares your score against the latest cut-off for every draw type
- Tells you the single change that would raise your score the most (e.g., retaking IELTS vs. gaining another year of experience)
- Uses the current rules — including the March 2025 change that removed job-offer points
- No sign-up, runs entirely in your browser
3 ways to raise your CRS score fastest
- Language tests — Moving from CLB 9 to CLB 10 in all four abilities can add up to 30+ points. Often the highest ROI.
- Provincial nomination — Worth 600 points, virtually guaranteeing an invitation. Research which PNP streams fit your profile.
- French — Even intermediate French (NCLC 7+) adds up to 50 points, and French-category draws have much lower cut-offs.
Bottom line
Don't guess your score. Calculate it, compare it against real draw data, and focus your effort on the improvement with the biggest point gain. Try the free CRS calculator — it takes 60 seconds.
