Needle Drop

As a music producer and engineer from Mexico City, my journey has been all about finding harmony in the chaos. For over a decade, I lived in Los Angeles, working on blockbuster film scores, mixing intricate layers of sound to tell stories. But music isn’t just work—it’s a lifestyle. Vinyl records have always held a special place in my heart. The crackle of the needle, the tangible connection to music history, and the thrill of discovering rare records have captivated me for years.

When I transitioned to software engineering, I wanted to merge my passion for music with my newfound love for coding. That’s how this web app was born. It’s a platform for vinyl enthusiasts like me—people who live for the hunt, the trade, and the stories behind every record.

The Problem: Vinyl Trading Needs a Remix

The vinyl community thrives on trading, but the current landscape is fragmented. Social media groups are cluttered, and marketplaces like eBay lack the soul and specificity vinyl lovers crave. There’s no unified platform that brings together enthusiasts for buying, selling, and exchanging records while preserving the community spirit.

Here’s the common struggle:

Discovery: Finding that one elusive record can feel like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Connection: Most platforms don’t encourage interaction between buyers and sellers beyond the transaction.

Value Recognition: Vinyl isn’t just about the music; it’s about the story, the rarity, and the condition. Current platforms treat records like any other product.

The Solution: A Community-Driven Vinyl Marketplace

My web app solves these problems by combining the best aspects of modern e-commerce with the rich culture of vinyl collecting. It’s more than just a marketplace; it’s a digital record store where collectors can connect, share stories, and discover hidden gems.

Here’s what makes it stand out:

  • Smart Search and Discovery

Using Spotify’s API, users can search for records by artist, album, or genre and get detailed information, including track previews. The platform even highlights “Looking For” records, showing listings others are actively seeking, adding a social layer to the hunt.

  • Personalization and Recommendations

Our algorithm learns from users’ favorite artists and genres, offering tailored recommendations. It’s like having a record store clerk who knows your taste.

  • Dynamic Listings

Each listing page is a blend of tech and aesthetics. Users can upload their own photos, but when they don’t, the app seamlessly integrates high-quality album covers from Spotify. It’s visually engaging and keeps the focus on the records.

  • Real-Time Interaction

With Socket.IO integration, buyers and sellers can communicate in real time. It’s not just about transactions; it’s about building connections, sharing stories, and fostering trust.

  • Community Trust

Feedback and trade histories are prominently displayed, building a reputation system that encourages positive interactions and accountability.

The Ingenuity Behind the Design

This web app isn’t just functional—it’s a reflection of my personal journey. As someone who’s engineered soundtracks for some of the most intricate films, I approached this project like composing a score: each piece of technology plays its role, coming together to create something greater than the sum of its parts.

Modern Tech Stack: Built with React and Vite, the frontend is fast and responsive, ensuring a seamless user experience. The backend, powered by Express and MongoDB, handles complex data efficiently.

Creative Use of APIs: Leveraging Spotify for album data and AWS for user-uploaded images showcases the perfect blend of third-party integrations and original content.

Problem-Solving with Style: From personalized recommendations to real-time chat, every feature is designed to solve a specific pain point, all while maintaining a sleek, intuitive interface.

This app transforms the vinyl trading experience by making it more personal, interactive, and efficient. It’s for people like me, who cherish the art of music, not just as sound but as a tangible experience.

In a world where everything is digital, vinyl reminds us of the beauty of the analog. This platform bridges that gap, blending modern technology with the timeless joy of record collecting. It’s a testament to what can happen when passion meets ingenuity—an ode to the music that shapes our lives and the tech that enhances our connections.
