How to Learn 300 English Words with One Telegram Flashcard a Day

Most vocabulary apps die the same way: you download one, study hard for three days, then forget the app exists. The app icon quietly gathers dust next to the ones you actually use. The problem isn't motivation — it's that a separate app asks you to go somewhere. A Telegram vocabulary bot flips that: the flashcard comes to you inside a chat you already open twenty times a day, so the daily habit builds itself.

Vocab Daily sends one English vocabulary card a day by DM, translated for Russian, Spanish, Portuguese, Indonesian, or German speakers. The catalog is 300 words split across three CEFR levels (A2, B1, B2 — 100 words each). Every card is scored with Know / Don't know taps, and an SM-2-style spaced repetition schedule brings weak words back sooner and lets the easy ones stretch out.

Here's how to set it up in about two minutes.

Step 1: Start the bot and pick your language

Open @WordADayLearnBot and run /learn english (or es, pt, id, de) so cards include a translation in your native language. The interface also follows your Telegram app language where possible. Translation matters more than people expect — hooking a new word to something you already know is what makes it stick.

Step 2: Set your delivery time

Run /time 9 and /tz +2 and the daily card lands at 09:00 in your timezone instead of some random hour. The card arrives as a normal DM, so notifications behave like any other chat — which is the whole point. If you pair it with a morning check of your Telegram reminders, the review becomes part of a routine you already have.

Step 3: Score each card honestly

Tap Know or Don't know on every card. The spacing algorithm uses only these taps: words you marked Don't know resurface sooner, words you Know stretch out to longer intervals. Tapping everything Know just starves the schedule of signal — you'll get longer intervals you haven't earned, and words will quietly rot. One honest tap per card is all the effort the system needs.

Step 4: Track progress

Three commands give you a full picture:

  • /streak — your consecutive-day run
  • /stats — words learned versus in progress
  • /plan — your whole review pipeline: due today, what resurfaces over the next 6 days, and how many words you've already locked in

/next pulls the next due card on demand whenever you have a spare minute. If you like streak mechanics, this pairs well with a daily habit tracker — vocabulary and habits respond to the same "don't break the chain" psychology.

Step 5: Scale up with Pro when A2 gets easy

The free tier draws from the 100 A2-level words, one card a day. Once that feels comfortable, Pro (per user) unlocks all 300 words across A2/B1/B2, raises the pace to 3 new cards a day, and lets you add up to 500 custom words with /add resilient стойкий — your own list, never shared. That's genuinely useful if you're studying for an exam and want the bot to drill your deck, not a generic one.

Why spaced repetition works in chat

The failure mode of flashcard apps isn't the algorithm — SM-2 variants are decades old. It's retrieval friction. With a bot in Telegram, there's no app switch, no "maybe later," no dashboard guilt. The card arrives, you tap, done. The schedule is entirely button-driven too: the bot never stores free-form text, only your Know / Don't know taps and per-word review state. And if you don't want to add anything at all, type @WordADayLearnBot in any chat to pull a card on the spot.

A card a day is 365 words a year. Three is over a thousand. Small, compounding, and honestly the least effortful language habit I've found — it just has to be somewhere you're already looking. That's the same principle behind a good daily question bot for group chats: bring the prompt to the people, don't wait for them to come.
