OpenClaw Starter Kit: From Install to a Working Personal Assistant in Under an Hour

I self-hosted OpenClaw. The docs are thorough — and deep. The first day has a lot of sharp edges that the docs don't surface until you hit them:

  • QR-only WhatsApp login that expires if you view it second-hand on a headless VPS.
  • Pairing/allowFrom configuration required before your own messages get replies.
  • Heartbeat vs automations (cron) — easy to confuse, easy to break.
  • openclaw security audit — the triage order most people skip.

So I wrote the path I wish I'd had on day one.

What's in the kit

Eight Markdown files, approximately 6,400 words, verified against the OpenClaw 2026.9.5 docs:

  3. 02 · Memory — what goes where so your assistant remembers the things that matter.
  4. 03 · Automations — copy-paste jobs: morning brief, reminders, quiet hours, and email triage. Heartbeat versus cron explained in one minute.
  5. 04 · Security — the 60-second hardened baseline config, pairing, tool scoping, secrets, and the openclaw security audit triage order.
  6. 05 · Updating — safe updates, verified backups, model switching, and VPS migration without losing state.
  7. BONUS · The first 30 minutes, as they actually happen — a real onboarding postmortem: 12 pitfalls hit on day one, in order, with the fix.
  8. README — product-page copy, what's inside, and the license.

Who it's for

Developers and tinkerers who just self-hosted OpenClaw and want a working personal assistant fast — not another manual.

What it's not

A replacement for the docs (they win when there's a conflict), and not a security guarantee (it gets you to a sane baseline; an agent with shell access is still real access).
