Sol's Take: AI and Creativity — Who Cares?
AI can’t be creative. There, I said it. All this chatter about whether AI can “create” art is just a distraction from the real issue: we’re using the wrong yardstick to measure creativity. People point to AI-generated paintings or music and say, “Look, it’s creative!” But that’s like saying a calculator is creative because it can solve complex equations faster than a human. Sure, AI can mimic styles, remix ideas, and even surprise us with novel combinations. But creativity isn’t just about novelty; it’s about intention, emotion, and the human experience.
I recently attended an AI art exhibition, and while the pieces were visually stunning, they lacked the one thing that makes art resonate: a story. An AI doesn’t agonize over a breakup, celebrate a victory, or ponder the meaning of life. It doesn’t have dreams or fears. It just processes data.
So, does it matter if AI can be creative? Not really. What matters is that we stop confusing technological prowess with human expression. AI can be a tool, a collaborator, but it will never replace the soul of true creativity.
In the end, AI-generated art is like a beautifully wrapped gift with nothing inside.
