Put the Degree Symbol (°) with the keyboard

The first documented use of the Degree Symbol ° was in 1657. It seems like a miniaturized O. The Degree symbol is used to describe degree as the name suggests.

Although the computer keyboard does not involve a key for this symbol, you can use a key sequence to type it.

The Degree Symbol (°), described by a small circle, is used to display different measurements, such as angles or temperature. In Word and other Microsoft Office applications, you can also include it through the Symbol dialog box.

How to type the Degree Symbol (°) using a key combination

Place the cursor where you want to insert the degree symbol. Then hold Alt + 0176 and that symbol will appear. You can use this method to insert it inside an email message or any office application.

What is Degree '°' Symbol?

The degree as a symbol in the form of a small circle located in the superscript is known almost completely in connection with the determination of temperature.

In common life in our area, these are degrees Celsius ° C. We can still reach the degrees of Fahrenheit ° F and, very unusually, a few more, but we are now a little away from the application of this article.

We have various opportunities for copying it on the keyboard, and now let’s talk about what they are.

Temperature Degrees Symbol - Writing With Keys

The number of the degrees of temperature, either degree Celsius (° C), degree Fahrenheit (° F), or Rankine degree (° K), will be written next to the figure if the order is not specified - The temperature in Lima reached 33 °.

Instead, it will be attached to the scale symbol if it appears explicit - The temperature in Lima reached 33 ° C.

The name, strictly speaking, is degree Celsius, although outside of technical contexts degree centigrade or simply degree is used.

1. 23 '°' C, with space between the figure and the symbol

The internationally placed symbol is ° C, which consists of a small circle followed by the letter C without space.

Space is left between the number and the symbol - 23 ° C. In non-specialized writings, only the circle is sometimes used, in which state it is written next to the number - 23 °.

In technical settings and per overall standards, this symbol is maintained for degrees of angle, which is a value that it also has in general, as in “It got a 180 ° turn”.

2. The symbol includes a circle, no or even a zero

Often the circle is displaced by an o or a zero, but they are not the correct spellings. If you opted for the or because of typographical limitations, it is excellent not to add an underline, but in any event, a point is not added.

3. The number and symbol must not be on separate lines

There should be no line break between the number and the symbol, for which a non division space or other support modified to the medium used may be used.

Using the ASCII Code

A good method to write non-standard characters is to use
ASCII Codes. The system is very easy. All you have to do is record and hold the left Alt, while holding it, start a several-digit numeric code on the numeric part of the keyboard and eventually issue Alt.

The degree even has two numeric codes defined, namely 248 and 0176. Choose the one you want, or try both, because it is possible that this or that will not work for you for various reasons.

ASCII for '°' = Alt + 0176, or Alt + 248

Last Words

These are some of the ways to insert the degree symbol easily in a Word document. If you are using MS Office tools for a long time, it may be very simple for you. But for a beginner, inserting symbols and special character cause too many troubles sometimes.
