When you enter a URL into your browser, the first step is to resolve that domain name into an IP address. This is done by sending a DNS query to a DNS server.

A DNS server is a specialized server that holds a database of domain names and their corresponding IP addresses. When it receives a DNS query, it looks up the domain name in its records and returns the appropriate IP address to the browser.

To improve speed and efficiency, DNS information is often cached at various levels:

  • Browser Cache : Your browser may store DNS records from previous requests. If you visit the same website again, the browser can retrieve the IP address from its cache instead of querying a DNS server.
  • Operating System Cache : Your computer's operating system also has its own DNS cache. It can intercept DNS queries and provide the IP address without sending the request to a DNS server if the information is already stored.
  • Router Cache : The router that connects your home network to the internet can also cache DNS information. This allows it to respond to DNS queries more quickly for devices on your network.

Browser Check : When you type a URL into your browser, it first checks its own DNS cache to see if the IP address for the domain name is already stored.

Operating System Check : If the browser doesn’t have the DNS record, it passes the request to the operating system, which checks its DNS cache.

Router Check : If the operating system doesn’t have the DNS record, the request is forwarded to your router, which checks its DNS cache.

ISP’s DNS Server : If none of these caches contain the DNS record, the request is sent to your Internet Service Provider’s (ISP) DNS server. This server checks its records or forwards the request to another DNS server if necessary.

Final Resolution : Eventually, the query reaches a DNS server that has the necessary record, and the IP address is returned to your browser.

1.2 Establishing a Connection: The TCP/IP Handshake

Once the IP address is obtained, your browser must establish a connection with the server hosting the website. This is done through a process called the TCP/IP handshake, which ensures that both the client (your browser) and the server are ready to communicate.

SYN Packet : Your browser sends a SYN (synchronize) packet to the server, asking to establish a connection.

SYN-ACK Packet : The server responds with a SYN-ACK (synchronize-acknowledge) packet, confirming it received the SYN packet and is ready to communicate.

ACK Packet : Your browser sends an ACK (acknowledge) packet back to the server, completing the handshake.

1.3 Sending the HTTP Request: Asking for the Website

Now that the connection is established, your browser sends an HTTP request to the server, asking for the website's content. This request includes details such as the type of browser you’re using, the type of content you can accept, and whether you have any cookies from the site.

Typically, your browser sends a GET request to retrieve the content. The GET request includes the specific path of the resource you’re requesting, such as /index.html.

Along with the GET request, your browser sends HTTP headers, which provide additional context like your browser type, accepted languages, and any cookies associated with the site.

1.4 Receiving the Response: The Website Arrives

The server processes the HTTP request and sends back a response. This response includes the content of the website, which can be HTML, CSS, JavaScript, images, and more. The server's response includes a status code, indicating whether the request was successful (200 OK) or if there was an error (404 Not Found). The server sends the website’s content back to the browser. If the site consists of multiple resources (like images or scripts), the browser may send additional GET requests to retrieve each one.

2. Rendering the Page: Turning Code into a Visual Website

After receiving the website’s content, your browser’s job is far from over. It now has to interpret and render this content into the visual page you see on your screen.

The browser parses the HTML content first, which outlines the structure of the page. Then it processes CSS files to apply styling, and finally, it executes any JavaScript to add interactivity.

  • HTML Parsing : The browser parses the HTML document, creating a Document Object Model (DOM) that represents the structure and content of the page.
  • CSS Parsing : The CSS is parsed and applied to the DOM to style the elements—defining colors, fonts, layouts, and more.
  • JavaScript Execution : JavaScript is executed to handle dynamic content, user interactions, and other functionalities.

2.2 Painting and Compositing: Drawing the Page on the Screen

The final stage is painting and compositing, where the browser actually draws the pixels on your screen. The browser calculates the layout of each element and draws them in the correct order, layering them as needed. The browser paints each element according to the styling rules defined in the CSS, resulting in the visual content. Browser composites the painted elements, ensuring that elements are layered correctly (e.g., dropdowns appear on top of other content).
