First, let me make one thing clear: I fucking hate the RICOH GR series.
I honestly think it’s nothing more than a toy camera that’s worse than an iPhone.
If you consider yourself a proud “GRist,” you’d probably be better off closing this page or scrolling away right now.
Seriously.
We probably won’t ever cross paths again.

So why do I even own a GR if I hate it that much?
For some reason, friends and acquaintances keep giving me GR cameras in near-mint condition—for free.
GR Digital III, GR Digital IV, the original APS-C GR, GR II, and now a nearly brand-new GR III.
All five were free.
I’ve never paid a single yen for a GR, and I’d rather die than spend even one yen on what I consider this piece-of-shit toy camera.
Hopefully that gives you some idea of where I’m coming from.
⚫︎Concept
To begin with, I don’t even think of the GR as a “real” camera.
But beyond that, I’ve never read a camera manual in my life.
I’ve never read beginner photography magazines, either.
I don’t even look at other people’s photographs.
When it comes to photography and cameras, I’m completely ignorant.
I don’t know the functions, I don’t know the proper operation, and I shoot entirely by instinct.
The concept of this series is simple:
I’ll document the process of gradually breaking this damn GR III in my own way by experimenting with different settings and seeing what happens.

I’ll leave you with a few photos I took over a decade ago using the GR Digital III.
The GRD III was at least a toy camera I could tolerate, but I’m deliberately attaching some completely unremarkable photos.
To be honest, I hate this kind of photography, but these were shots I took purely as experiments.
Most people will probably assume they were made using multiple exposure or reflections in glass.
But the GR Digital III doesn’t even have a multiple-exposure function, and I didn’t use reflections in glass, either.
These are straight-out-of-camera JPEGs.
I’ve never processed or developed a photo in my life.
So how did I end up with images like these?
Because I never read the manual.
If I had read it, I probably couldn’t have taken them.
