Book club in Apiumhub

We would like to share with you one of our activities that helps us to stay up to date with best practices, share experiences, thoughts and grow together. This initiative is called book club!

Right now the format we are following is to meet every two weeks after our internal meeting where everyone is present and talk for one hour or more about interesting topics related to things we have read or that we want to present/discuss.

Although it is called “Book Club”, in our case it is not always specifically about books, sometimes we discuss new articles that we have published in our blog or articles written by worldwide famous software experts.

Some topics that we have already discussed are:

  • Concurrency and parallelism
  • Functional programming
  • Monorepos
  • Software defined radio
  • Homomorphic encryption
  • Port knocking
  • Software Architecture Metrics
  • Legacy Code
  • Refactoring
  • Accelerate
  • Functional Kotlin
  • Design Patterns
  • The art of unit testing
  • And many others….

Currently every two weeks we meet to discuss one chapter of “Software Architecture Metrics:Case Studies to Improve the Quality of Your Architecture” book that was co-authored by Christian Ciceri – software architect at Apiumhub.

This book has 10 chapters written by 10 different software architects:

  1. Four Key Metrics Unleashed by Andrew Harmel-Law
  2. The Fitness Function Testing Pyramid: An Analogy for Architectural Tests and Metrics by Rene Weiss
  3. Evolutionary Architecture: Guiding Architecture with Testability and Deployability by Dave Farley
  4. Improve Your Architecture with the Modularity Maturity Index by Dr. Carola Lilienthal
  5. Private Builds and Metrics: Tools for Surviving DevOps Transitions by Christian Ciceri
  6. Scaling an Organization: The Central Role of Software Architecture by João Rosa
  7. The Role of Measurement in Software Architecture by Eoin Woods
  8. Progressing from Metrics to Engineering by Neal Ford
  9. Using Software Metrics to Ensure Maintainability by Alexander von Zitzewitz
  10. Measure the Unknown with the Goal- Question-Metric Approach by Michael Keeling

This book generates a lot of discussions because it is very practical, covering different case studies and scenarios and we feel related to what is written there.

Christian Ciceri will give a talk about his chapter in the Global Software Architecture Summiton October 3-4, Barcelona! Don’t miss this opportunity as most of the authors of this book will be there as well.
