The short answer
Unreal Engine 5 is realistic for mobile in 2026 for visually ambitious mid-core and core games, teams that already know Unreal, and projects shared with PC and console. It renders phones through a dedicated mobile path, so desktop showcase features such as Lumen and Nanite are aimed at higher-end hardware rather than typical phones. Plan for scalability tiers, app size, Android target API rules and a narrower choice of monetisation SDKs than Unity; for casual and hyper-casual games, Unity remains the more common choice.
How Unreal renders on phones
Unreal's mobile rendering path uses simplified, performance-oriented versions of many desktop features, with forward and deferred mobile shading options. Epic also documents using the desktop renderer on high-end mobile devices, but most games that need to reach mid-range and older phones build around the mobile path and scale up for powerful devices.
What to expect from UE5 features on mobile
| Feature | On typical phones | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| Lumen global illumination | Aimed at higher-end hardware | Use baked or simpler lighting for most devices |
| Nanite geometry | Aimed at higher-end hardware | Use traditional LODs and optimised meshes |
| Materials and post-processing | Supported in simplified forms | Budget carefully; profile on target devices |
| Animation and gameplay systems | Available as on other platforms | Watch CPU cost on lower-end devices |
Device targets and scalability
Define low, mid and high device tiers from your market data, and build scalability settings that change resolution, shadows, effects and draw distance per tier. Test on real devices in each tier from the first prototype; thermal throttling on phones can halve performance after a few minutes of play, which simulators do not show.
App size
Unreal builds tend to be larger than equivalent Unity builds, and app stores limit download sizes. On Android, Play Asset Delivery lets you split content into packs downloaded at install, after install or on demand. On iOS, on-demand resources serve a similar purpose. Plan content packaging early; app size affects install conversion.
Android target API rules
Google Play requires new apps and app updates to target Android 16 (API level 36) from 31 August 2026, with extensions available to 1 November 2026. Epic's guidance for Unreal Engine 5.7 recommended target SDK 35, so check that your engine version and toolchain can build for the level Google Play requires before planning a release. See our store submission checklist.
Monetisation and services
Fewer ad networks and analytics providers publish official Unreal SDKs than Unity ones. AppLovin publishes an official MAX plugin for Unreal, Unreal's online subsystems handle in-app purchases, and other services can be integrated natively. Our article on monetising an Unreal mobile game covers the options.
Performance habits that matter on phones
- Profile on device: use Unreal's profiling tools on real phones; editor numbers mislead.
- Control draw calls: merge static meshes, share materials and use instancing.
- Keep materials simple: fewer texture samples and instructions per material.
- Watch post-processing: bloom, depth of field and similar effects cost more on mobile GPUs.
- Budget memory: texture streaming and compression settings per device tier.
- Mind heat: cap frame rate where it makes sense to keep devices cool over long sessions.
iOS considerations
On iPhone and iPad, Unreal uses Metal. Recent devices are powerful, but memory limits still apply and the system closes apps that use too much. Test on the oldest iPhone you plan to support, keep an eye on memory spikes during level loads, and plan downloadable content through on-demand resources when app size grows.
Team skills
Unreal mobile work needs people who understand both the engine and mobile constraints. Blueprints speed up gameplay iteration, but performance-critical systems usually move to C++. If your team already ships Unreal on PC or console, mobile is a smaller step; if the team is new to Unreal, the learning curve adds months.
When Unreal is the right choice
- Mid-core and core games where visual quality is a key selling point, such as shooters and action games.
- Teams with Unreal experience or existing Unreal code and assets.
- Games planned for mobile, PC and console from one codebase.
- Projects using Unreal-specific tools such as MetaHuman or Blueprints-heavy workflows.
When Unity is usually better
- Casual, hyper-casual and puzzle games where app size and SDK breadth matter most.
- Games targeting many low-end Android devices.
- Teams relying heavily on ad mediation and third-party analytics.
Our Unity vs Unreal for mobile comparison goes deeper.
A practical checklist
- Pick device tiers and the minimum device before production.
- Prototype the core loop on the minimum device, not in the editor.
- Decide lighting and geometry approaches without relying on Lumen and Nanite for typical phones.
- Plan content packaging for app size limits.
- Confirm engine support for current Android and iOS requirements.
- Choose monetisation and analytics SDKs with maintained Unreal support.
