Hi everyone! For the Week 1 Hacktoberfest DEV Challenge "Touch Grass", I am sharing an idea about using open-weight AI models to connect people with the environment.
My project idea is an "AI Nature Explorer" app. It uses a lightweight, open-weight language model (like Google's Gemma) that can run offline on a mobile device without requiring internet access.
How it works:
- Hikers or students can take a photo of an unknown plant, leaf, or bird while exploring a forest or park.
- The local offline AI model analyzes the visual features and identifies the species instantly.
- It provides eco-friendly tips on how to care for that local plant or avoid invasive species, helping people engage deeply with nature instead of being glued to social media.
By utilizing open-weight AI models that operate locally, we can safely navigate remote areas where there is no internet, truly enabling tech enthusiasts to "touch grass" and enjoy the physical world!
