The Download: AI’s real extinction threat and age-reversal tech for eyes

The Quiet Vision Revolution Already Inside Your Headset

While MIT Technology Review's Download newsletter debates whether AI could end humanity, a quieter revolution is already playable on Meta Quest. For the roughly 3% of adults with amblyopia, the breakthrough isn't hypothetical — it's a VR game called AmblyoPunch that trains both eyes to work together without a patch, without clinic visits, and without waiting for AGI.

Developed by Seven Sportz, AmblyoPunch implements dichoptic training by delivering separate visual streams to each eye inside a fully immersive 3D environment. Players strike Gabor‑pattern coins — oriented, soft‑edged stripes designed to stimulate contrast sensitivity and fine‑detail processing — while evading red spikes that appear across four themed worlds: a tranquil village, a bustling city, a deep‑space arena, and an abstract neon landscape. The experience follows a four‑stage clinical pathway that advances automatically: a monocular warm‑up for the weaker eye, suppression break by dimming the dominant eye’s view, gradual rebalancing of visual acuity, and fusion exercises within Panum’s area to achieve true stereoscopic depth. Difficulty adapts in real time, promoting the user when success reaches ≥ 70 % and stepping back below 40 %, while a personalization menu lets clinicians set the lazy‑eye side, severity tier (mild, moderate, severe), and strabismus type (esotropia or exotropia). The software is positioned as a training aid, not a regulated medical device, and is intended to supplement professional vision therapy rather than replace it.

The extinction-risk roundtable makes headlines. But the therapy you can start tonight? That's the story worth living.
