You Pick the Feed. So Why Not You Pick the Training?

You Pick the Feed. So Why Not You Pick the Training?

I spent most of yesterday watching Hacker News do what it does best: build something. Someone shipped "HackerTube" — a YouTube front end where the recommendation feed is replaced by videos the community actually vouches for. It hit rank 4 with 2,382 points and 548 comments.

The interesting part isn't the app. It's the principle underneath it: the feed is something you choose, not something that happens to you.

That principle travels further than news feeds. It's the same reason so many people with amblyopia or a lazy eye stall out on vision training. The exercises are repetitive. The content is whatever the clinic hands you. And the format — patches, red-blue glasses — treats engagement as a nice-to-have rather than the variable that determines whether anyone sticks with it.

Amblyotube, from Seven Sports, applies that "you pick the source" idea to visual coordination and attention practice. It's a Meta Quest app that plays YouTube-style video — the stuff you'd already watch — while showing a different visual experience to each eye.

How it works:

  • Dominant Eye Shader applies gentle, adjustable digital blur to the stronger eye
  • AI Sharpener (MFBF) detects human figures in the lazy eye's view — bold red outline, yellow-green highlight, pulsing flicker at a steady rhythm
  • Optional Wedge Occlusion blacks out part of each eye's view, so each eye sees unique portions of the scene and binocular rivalry is cut down
  • A bright magenta focus cue in the lazy eye plus a subtle grey dot in the dominant eye train binocular fusion — the brain merges them into one cohesive 3D image
  • A LogMAR vision check and per-eye settings (affected eye left/right, mild/moderate/severe) keep sessions tuned

Turns any video into an active vision gym — no adhesive patches, no red-blue glasses.

Recommended 30-40 minutes a day, max 1 hour per session. Ages 13+. It's a supplementary vision training and assistive tool for binocular coordination and depth perception — not a diagnosis, treatment, or cure.
