If you are weighing Google Call Screen vs iPhone call screening, here is the short answer: both now ask an unknown caller who they are and why they are calling before you pick up, and both are free and built into the phone. Google's version on Pixel is older and more configurable, with automatic spam hang-ups, tap-to-screen on any call and an AI assistant that can reply for you. Apple's version, added in iOS 26, is simpler: one setting, works on every iPhone that runs iOS 26, and covers more languages. Everything below is checked against Google and Apple's help pages as of October 2026.

Google Call Screen vs iPhone Call Screening: Quick Answer

  • Phones: Google Call Screen does everything on Pixel phones. Other Android phones get only manual screening, only in the US and Canada, and only on "selected" devices. iPhone call screening works on iPhone 11 and later running iOS 26 or newer.
  • Automatic screening: Pixel screens unknown, suspicious and spam calls automatically in Australia, Canada, Ireland, the UK and the US. iPhone screens every unsaved number when you choose Ask Reason for Calling, in a long list of languages and regions.
  • Control: Pixel lets you tap Screen call on any incoming call, send preset replies or AI replies, and set separate protection levels. iPhone gives you three choices: Never, Ask Reason for Calling, or Silence.
  • On hold: Pixel has Hold for Me and Direct My Call (phone menus shown on screen). iPhone has Hold Assist and, in iOS 27, Call Context for business calls.
  • Missed calls: Pixel's Take a Message answers missed and declined calls and transcribes them. iPhone has Live Voicemail.
  • Neither one places a call for you or handles the conversation start to finish. That is a different kind of AI agent, covered near the end.

How Google Call Screen Works

Call Screen is part of Google's Call Assist features in the Phone by Google app, and it has two modes.

Manual screening. When a call rings, you tap Screen call. Call Assist answers, asks who is calling and why, and shows you a live transcript of the reply. From there you can tap a suggested response, pick up, or hang up. The preset replies include "Is it urgent?", "Report as spam", "I'll call you back" and "I can't understand". Optional AI replies, generated on the device, are more flexible, though Google warns they may be inaccurate.

Automatic screening. Call Assist screens calls on its own. Spam is hung up. Other screened calls ring through once the caller has answered, and you get a silent "Screening unknown number" or "Screening suspicious call" notification that opens the live transcript. On a Pixel 7 or newer you can set Maximum, Medium and Basic protection separately and choose whether to screen spam, possibly faked numbers and first-time callers.

Where it works. Automatic screening on Pixel is available in Australia, Canada, Ireland, the UK and the US. Manual screening on Pixel works in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, India (Pixel 10 and Pixel 11 series only), Ireland, Italy, Japan, Spain, the UK and the US, and needs a SIM from one of those countries. On non-Pixel Android phones, Google offers manual Call Screen only in the US and Canada and only on selected devices, without publishing a list. If your Phone app has no Call Screen settings, your phone does not support it. Some makers ship their own version: Samsung's Galaxy S26 series has its own AI Call screening.

How iPhone Call Screening Works

Apple introduced Call Screening in iOS 26 and describes it as building on Live Voicemail by "gathering information from the caller". There is one switch to find: Settings > Apps > Phone > Screen Unknown Callers, with three options for unsaved numbers.

  • Never: unknown calls ring like any other call.
  • Ask Reason for Calling: calls are screened. The caller is asked why they are calling before your phone rings, and you see their answer before deciding whether to pick up.
  • Silence: unknown calls are silenced and sent to voicemail.

Separately, Call Filtering in the same settings screen lets you move missed calls and voicemails from unknown numbers into an Unknown Callers list and silence suspected spam into a Spam list. Saving important numbers to Contacts (your school, your doctor's office) keeps them from being screened at all.

Where it works. iOS 26 runs on iPhone 11 and later. Apple's feature availability page lists Call Screening by language and region: English in Australia, Canada, India, Ireland, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Singapore, South Africa, the UK and the US, plus French (Canada, France), German, Japanese, Korean, Brazilian Portuguese, Spanish (Mexico, Puerto Rico, Spain, US), Cantonese and Mandarin Chinese in several regions. That is a broader list than Pixel's automatic screening. Apple notes that standard calling and data rates may apply.

Apple does not document a manual "screen this call" button, protection levels or AI-written replies; the setting applies to all unsaved numbers.

In short: Pixel gives you more control per call, iPhone a simpler default across more languages.

Beyond Screening: Hold, Phone Menus and Missed Calls

Waiting on hold. Google's Hold for Me lets Call Assist wait on hold and notify you when a person is ready. It works on Pixel 3 and newer in Australia, Canada, Japan, the UK and the US, in English (and Japanese in Japan), and Google warns it may not detect every hold. Apple's Hold Assist does the same job on iPhone 12, iPhone SE (3rd generation) and later: tap More then Hold Assist during a call, or accept the prompt when your phone detects hold music, and step away. You see a transcript of what you missed, processed on device and discarded when the call connects. Apple lists Hold Assist in English across nine regions plus French, German, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Brazilian Portuguese and Spanish. Both are free. For more on hold times, see our guide to never waiting on hold again.

Phone menus. This is a clear Pixel advantage. Direct My Call shows what the automated voice says and turns the options into tappable buttons, on Pixel 3a and later, in English, in the US and the UK. Apple does not document an equivalent for iPhone. What iOS 27 adds instead is Call Context, which Apple says can "proactively surface relevant information from across your apps when calling a business", such as an airline confirmation code from Mail.

Missed and declined calls. Pixel's Take a Message answers calls you miss or decline, plays a greeting, records and transcribes the message and can flag spam. Google says it is free, runs on the device, and transcribes live on Pixel 6 and later in the same eleven countries as manual Call Screen (India on Pixel 10 and later), with audio only in many others. On iPhone, the closest match is Live Voicemail, the feature Call Screening builds on, which Apple lists in the same languages and regions as Call Screening.

Privacy, Roaming and the Fine Print

Both companies keep the sensitive part on the phone. Google says Call Screen works on the device without Wi-Fi or mobile data and that screened calls are not saved to your Google Account or Web and App Activity. Apple says Hold Assist transcription is processed entirely on device and not stored by Apple, and that the call is not recorded.

The edge cases:

  • Roaming: Pixel's automatic screening does not run while roaming. Apple says calls are not screened when roaming, regardless of settings. Frequent travelers get less protection on both.
  • Emergencies: On iPhone, call screening turns off for 24 hours after you call emergency services, so a callback from a responder is never blocked.
  • Call forwarding: Google says not to combine automatic screening with call forwarding, because screened calls are not forwarded.
  • Accuracy: Google warns that some spam can't be detected and transcription isn't always accurate.

Who Should Pick Which

If calls are a big part of your day, here is how it shakes out.

  • Pick a Pixel with Google Call Screen if you want fine control: tap-to-screen on any call, AI replies, separate spam levels, and the menu help of Direct My Call. It is the stronger toolkit if you live in the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland or Australia.
  • Stay with iPhone call screening if you want one setting that just works on every unsaved number, across more languages, on an iPhone as old as the iPhone 11. Pair it with Hold Assist and you cover most nuisance calls.
  • On a non-Pixel Android phone, check your Phone app's settings first. You may have manual Call Screen (US and Canada only) or your manufacturer's own screening.
  • If you are drowning in spam specifically, our guide on how to stop spam calls with AI call screening walks through the block settings on both platforms and the third-party apps.

Where Assindo fits

Both built-in tools stop at "who is this and why are they calling". Assindo is an AI phone assistant that keeps going: calls you don't pick up forward to it, it has the conversation, screens out spam and sales calls, and sends you a summary plus a full transcript, on any iPhone or Android phone. It also makes outgoing calls for you, working through the phone menu, waiting on hold and talking to the person, which neither Call Screen nor iPhone screening does. It is a paid app rather than a free built-in feature, so it makes the most sense when the calls themselves, not just the spam, are eating your time; our personal AI phone assistant guide explains how that works day to day.

Google Call Screen vs iPhone Call Screening FAQ

Is Google Call Screen better than iPhone call screening?

It is more flexible. As of October 2026, Pixel lets you screen any call by tapping Screen call, send preset or AI replies, and tune spam levels. iPhone's version is simpler and covers more languages, but it screens all unsaved numbers the same way.

Can I get Google Call Screen on an iPhone?

No. Call Screen is part of the Phone by Google app on Android. The iPhone equivalent is Screen Unknown Callers set to Ask Reason for Calling, in Settings > Apps > Phone, on iOS 26 or later.

Which iPhones have call screening?

Call Screening arrived in iOS 26, which runs on iPhone 11 and later. Availability also depends on your language and region, which Apple lists on its iOS feature availability page.

Does Google Call Screen work on Samsung phones?

Google offers manual Call Screen on selected non-Pixel Android phones in the US and Canada only. Samsung's Galaxy S26 series also has its own Call screening with an AI assistant, set up in the Phone app's settings.

Does call screening work when I'm traveling?

Mostly not. Pixel's automatic screening does not run while roaming, and Apple says iPhone calls are not screened when roaming regardless of settings.
