Meet a lightweight macOS menu bar utility that keeps an eye on your public IP, VPN connection status, and potential IPv6 leaks.

isVPNYou start your VPN, see the familiar “Connected” message, and assume everything is fine.

But how do you know your internet traffic is actually leaving through your VPN?

Normally, you would open a website, check your public IP address, compare locations, and perhaps run an IPv6 leak test.

isVPN makes that process much simpler.

A Small Shield That Tells You What’s Happening

isVPN is a lightweight macOS utility that lives in your menu bar. It checks your visible public IP address and compares it with a locally stored baseline to help detect changes in your internet connection.

Instead of opening a browser, you can simply glance at a colored shield:

  • 🟠 Orange: Your connection appears to be direct.
  • 🟢 Green: A VPN egress IP has been detected.
  • 🔴 Red: A possible leak or unclear connection status needs attention. Click the menu bar icon for more details.

Know Where Your Traffic Goes

isVPN provides useful information about your internet connection:

  • Public IPv4 address — the address websites can see.
  • Public IPv6 address — when available.
  • Country and city — the approximate location of your internet exit point.
  • Country flag — a quick visual indication of where your traffic exits.
  • Tunnel status — a plain-English explanation of the detected connection state. And importantly, isVPN also looks for potential IPv6 leaks.

Some VPN configurations may route IPv4 traffic through a VPN while leaving IPv6 traffic exposed through the regular connection. isVPN helps you spot that situation.

If your network doesn’t support IPv6, the app simply reports it as unavailable.

No VPN Account Required

isVPN is not another VPN provider.

It doesn’t create VPN connections, install VPN profiles, or require access to your VPN account.

It works independently of your VPN software by examining your externally visible connection information.

That also means isVPN is an indicator, not a cryptographic verification of the tunnel. It detects changes in your public internet exit point rather than inspecting the VPN’s internal encryption.

Privacy Without the Baggage

A network monitoring tool should respect your privacy.

isVPN keeps things deliberately simple:

  • No analytics or usage tracking.
  • No third-party geolocation SDK.
  • Baseline IP addresses stored locally on your Mac.
  • Sandboxed macOS application.
  • HTTPS requests to FoxyFy geolocation services for public IP information. There is no account to create and no subscription to manage.

Small by Design

isVPN follows a simple philosophy: a utility should solve one problem without becoming another problem itself.

The application is less than 1 MB in size and stays out of your way until you need it.

Whether you regularly switch between VPN servers, work remotely, travel, or simply want a quick visual check of your connection, isVPN puts useful network information exactly where it belongs: in your Mac’s menu bar.
