This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 3: Slow and Steady
What I Built
I see a video on Youtube with a compelling title - it is answering a question that really interests me. I click on it, watch that 20-minute video, and it didn't even mention that topic... Too many times this happened and I had to do something about it.
Enter Gemma 4 running on my laptop.
A small Chrome extension that sends the video captions, title and thumbnail to Gemma. Gemma flags the videos that looks misleading, irrelevant or overhyped, saving me hours of otherwise wasted time.

Experimental local Gemma triage of YouTube titles and thumbnails against captions.
YouTube Clickbait Triage
An experimental Chrome/Chromium extension that compares a video's displayed title and actual thumbnail with its original English captions, then adds a subtle category rim to the thumbnail.
Analysis uses local Gemma, not Gemini or cloud inference. YouTube metadata captions and thumbnail images still require network access.
This is a research prototype, not a verified working release. YouTube layouts and access restrictions can break discovery or retrieval. A reported live “nothing is running” problem has not yet been reproduced or resolved Passing automated tests does not establish classification accuracy.
Demo UI using synthetic video cards and deterministic test scores—not a live assessment or accuracy demonstration.
What it does
The extension sends the viewer-facing title, thumbnail URL and individual video URL to a Python companion through Chrome Native Messaging. The companion retrieves the actual image and bounded, complete original English captions before running a multi-stage local classification.

How I Built It
Why Does Open Innovation Matter?
I - just like thousands of others - was able to embark on the programming and tech building journey because of open source. Open-source software (OSS) not only enables anyone to use it without a paywall, it also exponentially boosts the development of that software, because of the same people who use it. Also, thousands of successful businesses have been built by ordinary people with little investment, using OSS, which is a boost to the world economy. And, finally, it balances the power between all the stakeholders in the industry - the ones with the money, the ones with the network and the ones who are hands-on with the tools. It is a foundation of true democracy.
The Lazy Payoff
This tool is saving me literally hours each week. Well, I had an intermediary solution where I was pasting the video URL to an AI chatbot for a summary, to see if it was worth me watching it. But even then, the cost in time per week would be in hundreds of minutes, and the cost in annoyance is immeasurable.
With what I have now, I just keep scrolling like I used to, and know then and there what to click on and what to avoid.
