Hey everyone! ๐
Over the past few weeks, Iโve been building Kex (.kx), a lightweight programming language built from scratch in Rust.
The goal with Kex is to create an accessible, clean scripting language with a frictionless developer experience right out of the box. Today, the project reached a major milestone: a fully automated Windows installer (KexSetup.exe) and an auto-deploying VS Code extension with custom syntax highlighting.
๐ Whatโs Working Right Now:
Core Runtime & CLI (
kex): Runs.kxfiles globally right from your terminal.Installer & Tooling: Inno Setup installer that manages
PATHenvironment variables and auto-installs the VS Code.vsixextension.DX: Full syntax highlighting out of the box in VS Code and clean ANSI-colored error reporting.
๐จ Where We Need Help (Good First Issues!):
The core lexer and parser are solid, but as we test standard scripts (like interactive calculators), weโve identified a few runtime evaluation bugs that need some Rust love:
**`cast()` Return Type Fix:** Currently, `cast(val, "float")` returns `Value::String` instead of parsing into `Value::Float` / `Value::Int`. This causes addition like `"1" + "2"` to concatenate into `"12"` instead of evaluating to `3`.
**Grammar / Parser Tweaks:** Supporting chained `else if` blocks without requiring explicit nested `else { if ... }` blocks, and clean parsing for nested empty function calls like `cast(kxin(), "float")`.
