Last month I walked into a client's home in Lagos to troubleshoot what they described as a "smart home problem." Their voice assistant kept failing to turn on the AC. Their app dashboard showed a battery icon stuck at a suspicious, unmoving 40%. Their lights would flicker whenever the fridge compressor kicked in.
None of that was a smart home problem. It was a power problem wearing a smart home costume. The inverter was undersized for the load, the battery bank was wired with a mismatch that was quietly cooking the cells, and no amount of automation was ever going to fix it — because automation was never the thing that was broken.
I've been installing solar and battery systems for years now, and I see this pattern constantly. It's the reason I started my company in the first place, and it's the reason I want to make an unpopular argument: most of what gets marketed as a "smart home" today is smart in name only. The intelligence is cosmetic. The infrastructure underneath is often an afterthought.
Convenience got rebranded as intelligence
Somewhere along the way, the smart home industry decided that "smart" meant "app-controlled." Lights you can dim from your phone. Locks you can open with your voice. Thermostats with a sleek dashboard. All genuinely convenient. None of it, on its own, actually intelligent.
Here's the test I use: does the system make decisions, or does it just take orders faster? A light that turns off when you say "turn off the light" isn't smart — it's just a light with better UX. A thermostat that runs your AC on a rigid schedule regardless of whether your solar panels are producing a surplus or your battery is nearly empty isn't smart either. It's convenient. Convenience and intelligence get sold as the same thing, and homeowners end up paying premium prices for what's essentially a nicer remote control.

This is the part that doesn't get talked about enough in smart home content: none of the automation matters if the energy system underneath it is wrong.
A few things I think actually separate a genuinely smart home from a gadget-heavy one:
Correctly sized solar and inverter capacity. Not "whatever the salesman had in stock," but capacity matched to real, measured load. This is unglamorous work — load calculations, not app demos — but it's the foundation everything else depends on.
Battery storage that's actively managed, not just bolted on. A battery bank with no monitoring is a liability with a countdown timer on it.
Load prioritization logic — the system should know what runs on solar, what runs on battery, what falls back to grid, and in what order, especially during outages.
Automation layered on top of that, so voice commands and app controls are managing a system that's already efficient — not papering over one that isn't.
Skip straight to step four, and you've built a very expensive way to control a badly designed house.
Why the industry keeps selling it backwards
None of this is an accident. Automation is the exciting, demoable part — a voice assistant turning off a lamp is a great trade show moment. A correctly sized charge controller is not. So marketing budgets flow toward the flashy layer, and the boring layer — the one that actually determines whether your home is efficient, resilient during outages, and cheap to run — gets treated as an implementation detail.
I think that ordering is backwards, and I think it's costing people money. I've done solar inverter installation work for clients who bought smart home kits first and energy systems second, and it almost always means redoing the wiring, resizing the battery bank, or replacing an inverter that was never right for the load in the first place. Fixing the foundation after the fact costs more than getting it right from day one.
Where I actually land on this
I'm not anti-automation, and I'm not anti-AI in the home. When it's built on solid energy infrastructure, automation is genuinely useful — smarter load shedding, better outage handling, real energy savings instead of theoretical ones. The technology isn't the problem.
The sequence is the problem. Energy infrastructure first, automation second. Not the other way around.
