The pattern: Shipping "ChatGPT but for our domain" is the fastest way to a confusing product. Users already have a chat app. What they need is AI that shows up inside the job — draft, suggest, transform, explain — with an undo button and a clear owner.

Why it matters: Chat interfaces hide structure. They bury status, make errors conversational, and train users to restate context the app already has. Better AI UX treats the model as a coworker with a ticket, not a mystical oracle in a sidebar.

Patterns that beat the empty text field

  • Embedded actions — "Summarize this invoice," "Propose settle plan," "Explain this ABAP dump" on the object itself.
  • Reviewable drafts — AI writes; humans approve. Diff views beat streaming monologues.
  • Progressive disclosure — start with a safe suggestion; reveal deeper tools after trust is earned.
  • State you can see — sources used, confidence, and next step — not just a green checkmark.

Enterprise angle (without the buzzwords)

In ERP and ops tools, the winning UX is often a structured form with an AI assist lane — not a free-form agent that can click anything. Permissioned actions plus audit logs beat open-ended autonomy for most business workflows.

What we'd watch next

Design systems that treat AI affordances as first-class components (draft chip, cite popover, approve/reject) instead of bolting a chat widget onto every screen.
