Instagram Screen Time limit not working on iPhone? The 5 settings behind it (2026)

I build minulo, an iPhone app that sits on top of Screen Time, so I've spent more time than I'd like inside Settings > Screen Time. When a limit on Instagram "doesn't work", it's almost never broken. It's one of five settings doing exactly what it was told. Here they are in the order I'd check them.

Menus below follow Apple's support pages as of October 2026. iOS 26 and iOS 27 differ, so I note which is which.

1. The limit is only a reminder

By default, when an App Limit runs out, iOS shows a screen with an Ignore Limit button. One tap and Instagram is back. If you set the limit on your own phone, you also know the passcode, so it's a speed bump at best.

Fix (iOS 26): set a Screen Time passcode, open the Instagram limit and turn on Block at End of Limit. If you want it to actually hold, let a friend or partner type the passcode so you don't know it.

2. You're on instagram.com in Safari

App limits cover the app, not the website. Once the app is blocked, the browser is the obvious way around, and your thumbs find it fast.

Fix (iOS 26): Content & Privacy Restrictions > App Store, Media, Web & Games > Web Content > Limit Adult Websites, then add instagram.com under Never Allow. On iOS 27, a Time Allowance also covers websites that the app declares as its own.

3. You updated to iOS 27 and App Limits disappeared

iOS 27 replaced App Limits with Time Allowances and Screen Time Schedules. If your old limit seems to have vanished after the update, that's why.

Fix: Screen Time > Time Allowances, then set time for a category such as Social Media. The new controls need iOS 27 or later on all of your Apple devices.

4. Instagram is on Always Allowed

Apps on Always Allowed ignore both Downtime and limits. It's easy to put Instagram there for one group call and forget about it for months.

Fix: Screen Time > Always Allowed, and remove Instagram.

5. It's a child's iPhone in Family Sharing

Limits set on the child's own phone, or a family member's device on older software, are the usual cause.

Fix: update every device in the family group, set the child's Screen Time from Settings > Family on the parent's device, and check that the child has their own Apple Account.

Still not working?

Update iOS, restart the iPhone, then delete the Instagram limit and create it again. These are general steps, not something from Apple's pages, but they clear a surprising amount of stuck state.

What building on Screen Time taught me

Two things from the developer side explain why these limits feel leaky:

  • Screen Time only knows whole apps (and on iOS 27, categories). There is no "Reels only" switch. Block Instagram and you block your DMs too, which makes the limit hard to live with if your group chats are there.
  • Third-party apps can't change what the Instagram app shows. They can only ask Screen Time to shield it, the same mechanism a limit uses. So if Screen Time is misbehaving on a phone, every app built on it, mine included, misbehaves too. Fix the five things above first.

That first point is the gap minulo tries to fill. It shields the official app with Screen Time and opens Instagram's website inside minulo with Reels, Explore and suggested posts hidden, while DMs and search keep working. If you'd rather keep the group chats and lose the feed, that's what it's for. If you just want Instagram gone for an hour a day, the fixes above are all you need.
